I have an LG Tribute 5 (5.1.1) with an unlimited data plan+8gb hotspot from Boost Mobile.
I bought this device mainly as a tethering hotspot, (i used to live in a rural area)
The 8gb hotspot cap got to me, and so i bought PDANet. However even after paying for it it still has the incessant tendency to shut off every 30 minutes, and I'm looking for a permanent stable solution, without paying Boost up the ass. This is our only option as there are no cable or dsl line, even in this town of 60k people, but there is a cell tower close by ~100 meters away.
I've heard about Kingoroot and the tether_dun_required hack, but I'm not following through with this without a professionals opinion.
Please note I do not have a Windows PC, only other mobile devices.

1,3: I have the FoxFi key app installed, it even says the full version installed, but it still likes to shutoff every ~45mins to an hour.
2: That's an iOS app, I'm on android.

With that device, I don't remember there being any custom development for it but I have used that build.prop hack with success but it'll be a hell of a lag.. Better off to get a device with custom ROMs as the native hotspot in them will work tons bettet

An alternative to using your phone as a hotspot is to get a separate, discrete mobile hotspot:
    https://www.boostmobile.com/hotspots/zte-warp-connect
It's $50 but it'll free up your phone so your home will still have WiFi connectivity even when you need to take that phone with you when you're not around. I've played around with a similar device and the coverage range, at least compared to a decent router, isn't very impressive but it's still a good option otherwise.

Try the older versions of foxfi that still have the 'hide usage by proxy' feature. You'll have to set up the proxy in WiFi settings but I used it daily for about 2 years & I have boost
