My OS seams to have an absurd usage. I did a search for a few hours and can't find a definite reason or solution. One solution was to turn of data backup, which I thought might be a viable soulution. However, looking at the usage rate, after April 29/30 the usage has been zero. I don't know what changed, cuz I'm a creature of habit during the work week with my usage.

I turned my backup off anyway, but I'd really like to figure out the true cause to this and possibly a solution as 1gb is atrocious!

Phone is a stock S7 edge (SM-G935V) running 6.0.1 on verizon

Chrome and YouTube both show the bulk occurred in "foreground" operation i.e. the apps were being directly used rather than working 'behind the scenes'.

Android OS will include OS/app updates along with anything else resulting from system processes.

The Google app was just (got mine yesterday) updated and since then useage has been through the roof for me. It was never high, actually very low (Moto X Pure). Now, not so much. I did a full system cache clear, no change

My question wasn't Data consumption as a whole, or foreground/background, just the OS. I only showed chrome and YT to show the total usage and any pattern correlation that they may have. You dont think 850MB is excessive?

Did you just buy the phone around the beginning of April? It might have been updating all the preinstalled apps, or other updates, and counting the data usage as being from Android.

No I got it on release date (march 11?). However, even upon release with the system updates back to back, my OS was little to none at 190 MB.

Edit: Last system update was Mar 30th. I beilive there was 2 if not 3 updates the first month of release.

If it's app and OS updates hogging your wireless data, could try setting it to WiFi only. Or turn off auto update apps completely.

Idk what app it could be. The only apps I use that heavily and quite habitually are chrome and youtube. I dont play games or stream music. I feel my web usage is accurately accounted for.

Compared to my own monthly average? Yes it is, but that's why I suggested that updates that could be responsible - every OEM has different update schedules. I don't use an S7 so I can't speak in absolutes.

Perhaps other Galaxy S7 owners can shed more light on the issue? I'll move this thread to the appropriate sub-forum in the hope that you receive more specific advice.

My droid mini uses a lot of data for the OS and it rarely receives security updates AT ALL

I think I figured it out... It seems youtube usage directly correlates with OS. Anytime I heavily stream YT the OS usage spikes.
