I have a Xiaomi Redmi note 4. It is a very abused phone. It is a little bent and has cracked corners. Everything worked fine until yesterday. While i was doing some calculations at the calculator, the phone started doing weird things. It seemed like it was tapping the "back" button on my phone. Every time i tapped on the screen or the buttons, it would tap the "back" button on its own or the button with the 3 lines which shows the open apps in the phone. The weird thing is that it does that if i bring my finger very close to the screen. Even if i don't touch the screen but bring my finger really close, it will start doing these weird things! After some time it will stop doing it. Any help ?

    Finder=finger?
It sounds like your phone is pretty beat up.
Hardware failure is my best bet

But how do you explain the behaviour when i bring my finger close to the screen it goes nuts? I don't even touch it

    That behavior is hardware related.

But i mean, how it detects my finger without even touching it?? It doesn't do that all the time. Its really weird

I tend to agree with @Dannydet this does sound like a quirky hardware issue. Going by your description, given the phone is a bit banged up it's likely to be the digitizer part of the screen is damaged.
While it's still functional this would be a good time to make sure all your data is safely backed up while you can.
It 'could' be just a software issue but if it is hardware-related you might want to just take this phone in to a local service shop and have them check it over.

Given what you've said, definately sounds like a hardware problem, touch-screen digitizer probably. Repair or replacement required.

yes what you described about bringing the finger close to the screen and then the sensor senses..that's hardware issue because is the sensor..just like Danny said..perhaps your phone more likely still have a good two legs but since it's been mistreated a little bit maybe need some repair..nobody is definitely saying that your phone is done no absolutely not..

But if you want to put it through a test why don't you like Svim said..backup your data and do not just one but two factory reset and see if the problem still persists..you might get lucky and it might fix it..

I flashed the phone with the official rom. The problem is still here

By just flashing the official firmware..doesn't stop the problem to get off of your hair..you are just adding what was there originally..but you still running with the problems your device built up along the time..

Does this make sense to you?

Just so you know..I'm advising you the master resets because there's power on it that can unroot pestilence and growth stuff dipped in your device..one time in my former phone the Bluetooth and WiFi were malfunctioning after a format reset..didn't wanna turn on..I went ahead with another master reset..didn't do a thing..it took me two consequently more of those to fix that hardware issue..at least I believe and fell was a hardware problem..

I hope this gives you some light.

Bent and cracked can never achieve %100.
    NEVER.
Neither glass or plastic work that way.

Hardware problem. Maybe time to buy a new phone, and sending that Xiaomi for recycling?

Phone screens use what is called 'capacitive response'.

Describing this in detail is not necessary.

Suffice it to say that the screen electrically reacts to your touch.

Due to damage/maladjustment, this can happen while there is still distance between your finger and the screen.

You never really touch the screen itself anyway. There is slways a layer of glass or plastic between it and you.

The screen reacts to the electrical change when you touch the covering.

Due to the maladjustment, it has become more sensitive, and can now sense your presence even sooner.

Actually, if this was a feature that was adjustable, instead of a flaw, it would be pretty cool.

Just think, no more fingerprints on the phone!
    Less germs on it too.

but it doesn't do that all the time. It does that rarely

Your post described it as happening often.
In fact, 'every time' was a phrase that was stated.

    But that doesn't matter.
The screen reacts to electrical change, not actually touch.
There is electrical change as your finger gets near the screen- even before actual contact is made.
Due to abuse, the adjustment has been skewed so that the screen reacts before it is actually touched.

I actually have experienced this as well, when my finger was damp.
The screen reacted before I had even touched it.

As soon as I dried my hand, it acted normal again.
