Step 2: you connect the phone via usb, then select the option to copy files (i.e. mount the card as a removable disk). Then copy the apk to your sd card same as to a usb stick.

Step 3: use your favourite file manager (inbuilt, ES File Explorer, Astro, whatever) and find the apk you just copied (after ejecting the card from the computer and disconnecting the phone). Then click on the apk and you will be asked whether you want to install it. You need to change your settings to allow non-market app installation for this to work.

I use other message backups, so don't know this one, but hopefully that will clarify the instructions.

+1 on SMS Backup & Restore (Ritesh Sahu). I use it on my phone to manage my SMS threads, backing it up and deleting the threads when it gets to a certain count and I've recommended it to all my friends and family who have installed it as well. It is very useful with older phones with limited internal storage space and RAM or if you would like to backup your SMS threads as an XML file, export it to your PC, and be able to view the threads on your PC.
