Android's unusable Toolbar documentation

I am using https://developer.android.com/training/appbar/actions.

How do I add the menu items to the toolbar?!?!?!?!?!?! Who wrote this unusable documentation?

I even had to ghetto rig how to add the toolbar because setSupportActionBar() didn't even work. I ended up adding the toolbar to a LinearLayout.

Plus they don't even give you the implementation you need to use!!!!!! I had to find it on StackOverflow.
