Used to work for 911. Loved the work. Hated the workplace. Developed a love/hate relationship with many firefighters, cops, paramedics, etc....

Yeah, most cops that I've encountered are dicks because they know they can be.

And most firefighters and paramedics I encountered were dumb as a bunch of rocks and had no clue how to use their radios. Nice people. Just not very intelligent. At least that was my experience.

I may be a little biased, because my father is a firefighter/EMT, but your statement is a little absurd. Considering the fact that the great majority of the firefighters/emts i've met, even those in no way associated with my fathers co-workers fall into your category. In fact many of them are very intelligent and very nice people, who know how to use their radios. I'm wondering, is this insult of yours directed towards volunteer fire dept/emts? they do have a little less training (as far as your radios comment) however i will say...
Evidently you're a police officer, or are very close to someone who is, because saltine's statement seems to have struck a nerve with you. you should PM him if you have a problem, instead of insulting the many firefighters/EMTs who im sure are members here. uncalled for...

Both professionals and volunteers. I have been burned on the air many, many, many, many times by firefighters and paramedics who didn't tell me they were on scene, didn't tell me they were transporting and didn't tell me they were at the hospital. I could play back the tape and prove it to them. But they would come up on the radio and say something like "Dispatch, I was on scene at 1800, transporting at 1815 and at the hospital at 1825. You acknowledged me. Please correct this." Bull crap. I could play back the tape at those times and there was no traffic from them. After a while you get sick of the general rudeness. If you don't know how to use your radio or you choose not to, don't blame me. I have had firefighters key up on the air and say stuff like "I'm enroute to 1234 main street and have been for 5 minutes." I would tell them that I already showed them enroute and they would say something like "Well, that's not what it says on my computer. Fix it." I'm sorry, but I can't fix their computers over the radio. I'm really not that good.
To be perfectly fair, police officers were not much better.

so you're not only saying you're just about EVERY firefighter/EMT you've ever encountered can't use their radio, but police as well?? so in other words, you're the only person who can use their radio correctly? sorry if i'm not quick to be convinced....
even if that WAS true, with the specific and disproportionate number of individuals you've dealt with, does that mean ALL of them have this problem? or furthermore, that all of them are unintelligent? no. this is a stretch, and a quite far-fetched stretch at that.
and once again, a blatant unwarranted INSULT.
you can only hope one of these unintelligent firefighters never has to rescue your family if your house catches on fire, or that one of these dumber than rocks EMTs can stop trying to figure out how to use his radio long enough to give you CPR. come on man, you can make a point without being hurtful.

i didn't think i was, merely calling HIM out on making it personal. i'm actually surprised no mods did it before i stepped in.
anyways, back to the discussion at hand-
I'm not a firefighter myself, but as I mentioned before my father is a firefighter/EMT for the city. He's actually going to be retiring from the dept. this january and has been working part time as a forensic arson investigator. when he retires, he's either going to bump up to full time there or start driving a truck to get a little free travel-time. I believe that's where i get my randomness, from him haha
he's told me he's stayed there so long mainly because of good benefits and a decent amount of time off, but the work schedule (24 hours on, 48 off) wears him out, due to being woken up multiple times a night for calls some nights.

Anyway, all of Long Island, NY is all volunteers who are trained just as well as paid ff. The only difference is that they can stay home and go to the firehouse if there is a fire rather than stay there all day.
It is a great profession. You really can't abuse being a firefighter or a paramedic, but you can easily abuse your power as a police officer. Not saying all cops are like that, my neighbor is one and he is a model citizen. Just saying this from past experiences.
