I recently moved and really can't get a signal at all unless I have the phone by the front window sill. I'm considering a pcs repeater, but would much rather find a viable voip / sip solution, even if it means paying per minute.

First, I tried GrooveIP, fiddling with the different audio processing. It seems that no matter what, I'll either have insane echo, choppiness, or flat out lack of sound for the first 10 seconds or so of every call. After that, it seems to have the potential to work wonderfully up to a minute or so, when it'll go silent for a few seconds or drop the call. I've played with the wifi settings (and with cm7, I believe the timeout is 15 minutes or so anyway). All in all, pretty unusable.

Next, I used sipdroid to sign up for a pbxes account. Sipdroid itself is a horribly buggy app, at least on the Triumph. For the most part, I seem to be able to hear the other person crystal clear, although the volume is low despite my adjustments. Apparently, I'm only ever choppy to the other person.

Beyond that, I've just done testing with other sip clients, using the pbxes account, with similar results. With cm7's gb native sip client, it's unbelievably choppy on both ends seemingly, except when I dial 1800comcast (my test number of choice. if I'm feeling like it, I'll wait to speak to an operator to see how it goes. f em)

So.. any better solutions? At this point, I'm inclined to believe that pbxes is garbage, at least the free account I have. I tried 3cx on my pc, connected to my pbxes account, and apparently I'm still choppy as hell.

Trunking with google voice would obviously be a plus, but if I really wanted the "proper" caller id, I could always use gvcallback. Otherwise, ideally, if there's a good free sip provider with a trunk to pstn and a number that's by the minute, I'd probably be ok. At least I'd be willing to test.

    Cheers

Or of course, better yet, if someone has some magical settings for grooveip or pbxes and a great sip client, I'm all ears. Pretty much all the guides just reference grooveip or sipdroid that I've found.

It looks like sipgate ran out of numbers

    Grab hold of "CSipSimple".
    Get it from the market.

    Cheers!

Ive tried both groove ip and the builtin CM7 sip client and they work fine over wifi, 3g has never worked well even on my Optimus V before.

I have a Google voice number and on CM7, if I set the phone app to "ask every call" whether its a internet call or cell call, and if i set "call with google voice or without" to ask every call, and make a call thats calling through google voice, AND through internet (wifi connected) it fails. i have to re try through my cell network and use my VM minutes.

I have seen that as well.

Thanks kwag, I tried csipdroid, but it seems the same. I'm guessing it's probably a pbxes problem, since it sounds the same even if I use my computer connected to pbxes.

Of course, skype! It's always worked great, even over 3g. Tried a bunch of legit 800 calls today, and didn't have a single issue. Tried grooveip right after to confirm it wasn't a fluke, and of course, grooveip cut out and dropped the call within 10 seconds.

I rememberreading Groove IP supports tje only codec that Google Voice supports, so it's really a GV problem Skype uses more advanced codecs that can work around the flaky 3G network.

The whole deal is that I don't get sprint reception at my new place so I'm trying to find a viable clip over wifi on the triumph. Although I did test grooveip over 3g and it was about the same

search for threads here or over at xda for posts by 'snrb', he's pretty active helping people's issues with Groove IP. It may be just a setting weak for your phone. It has worked for me on Optimus V & MT in the brief testing I've done on wifi.

I use Viber. Of course, the other user has to be on Viber, but it allows for free wifi calling to other viber users. Sounds/Works great! Also, cross platform between iOS and Android.
