Anyone notice MetroPCS isn't selling the spirit?

I certainly don't consider myself unlucky.

The Spirit's probably the best phone I've ever had and By Far The Best for the $ I have into mine. (About $90) It's a year old nearly without a single mark on it. It wouldn't bother me one bit to keep it til the day they turn off CDMA.

There has to come Some time where they actively start Pushing people towards GSM. That can't happen while they are actively advertising CDMA phones. (Duh) I would consider them not advertising them anymore to be that first "push" step. I'm sure they still have bunches of them in the stores and would be glad to sell one to you there.

Once they exhaust in store inventory, they'll likely be near a point where they just won't offer Any More CDMA activations. That's how I'd do it.

Any CDMA phone that supports VoLTE is gonna continue to work after the CDMA network gets shut down. At the Metro store they assured me that the Spirit and CDMA version of the S3 will continue to work as normal after the shutdown. This makes sense since they're still selling the Spirit in store.

On another note...

For anyone on a very strict budget this would be a decent upgrade path which is much better than the spirit in both hardware and software.

  • Only $99
  • Quad Core!!!!
  • 4.5'' qHD display
  • Jelly Bean 4.2.2
  • 1gb ram
  • GSM
For enthusiasts it already has root & recovery on XDA.

Alcatel OneTouch Fierce | Alcatel Android Phones | No Contract Phones | MetroPCS | MetroPCS

Not the phone for me though lol. Nexus 5 is what I consider a great budget phone.

I was planning on getting the Nexus 5. But with tax and shipping it will cost $445. I in no way am paying that much for a phone. Than it says it will be two weeks before they even ship it.

32gb version?

For me roughly about the same as you for 32gb ($445) and about $400 for 16gb version.

Problem is that for under $400 off contract there is no phone out there that's better. You would have to buy used to get anything comparable to nexus 5 for under $400.

The nexus 5 is future proof. 5 years from now it will still be receiving the latest android version straight from google and latest CM from devs.

for forking out $400 shipping should be free. Hmm interesting. i just checked back on their site and now its saying 431 I must have select one of the other shipping options the first time. The t-mobile by my house has them in stock. I think ill check it out tomorrow along with the SG mega and than decide what i want to do.

I don't agree with free shipping, but that's maybe cause I value the N5 differently.

Any phone with similar specs to the N5 costs $500 plus. So believe me even at $450 it's still a good price for a phone with the best quad core on the market and a high end 1080p HD display and not to mention guaranteed updates.

I wouldn't get the Mega cause that's a test market phone. Samsung is using it to test how big of a phone people are willing to buy. That's why they threw mid range hardware on it to keep it somewhat affordable. No super amoled display, only 720p tft lcd, only dual core, and possibly no software update. The screen ppi is so low that icons look fuzzy around the edges on it. At $400 plus tax it's not worth it.

You are looking at phones as a dev not as a user. All you keep talking about is specs. As a user thinks of a phone how they will use it. I'm not thinking as a dev. I'm thinking about my daily use of the phone. I work security, I Watch alot of media on my phone. The Mega screen is perfect for that. Also money is an aspect, $400 is a lot of money for anyone that doesn't have deep pockets. $10 for shipping is a lot. The phone isn't that heavy. Don't advertise your phone as being $399 and then stiff them with another $10 for shipping. It's punishment enough that I have to pay almost $30 in taxes.

but hey, everyone has their own reasons for what they will pay out. Few years ago if someone told me I'd be considering paying $400 for a phone I'd laugh at them.

Your wrong... I'm not looking at it as a dev. I'm looking at it as an investment. When you buy a mid range phone you'll end up wanting to replace it not long after like the spirit which in turn costs you more in the long run. Also mid range phones loose value fast so if you decide to sell it to upgrade you wont get much for it.

From a consumer perspective not "dev" the N5 and the likes are phones you can have for years to come with continued satisfaction. If you decide to sell it for upgrade you'll get good money for it. The N4 and the likes are still expensive.

You just spent not even a year ago nearly $300 on the spirit and already on the market for a new phone. That's usually what happens when you buy a mid range. I knew that when I bought the spirit, but I needed a secondary phone so that was fine.

If all you care about is a big screen then by all means get the Mega. It's roughly about $425 with tax. You could definitely enjoy all your porn on that huge screen lol. :p

I'm not you, i don't look at porn on my phone.;) I don't sell my phones to buy other ones. The only reason I'm switching from the spirit is because CDMA phones are on the outs. I have money at the moment to spend. When T-mobile finally scraps CDMA all together I may not have money. It not about getting the latest thing just to get it. My only complaint was that I think for spending $400 on their phone they should at least offer free shipping. $10 is a lot to just ship. I don't like buying stuff online to start with. Don't tell me your phone is $399 than hit me with $10 shipping at the end. They need to find a retailer that people can go to and physicly buy the phone instead of relying on just on online sales. I hate buying something i cant put my hands on first. to me its bad business.

Anyways, I'm not buying anything till Friday so Ill make a decision than. I'm conflicted, I'd liek to have 4.4. I like the look of the nexus and the support for it. but I like the large screen of the Mega, and I can walk into any store right now and buy it. no waiting. with t \he mega I can buy it and have it activated for the same price that just the nexus will cost. with that dang shipping.

Spirit and the CDMA version of S3 will still work when CDMA network gets shut down since both support VoLTE.

Anyways, enjoy your Mega when/if you get it. Nice screen! :thumb:

yeah they say that, but when it comes to it, they will force people over to GSM, that's how t-mobile woks. they're like obama.

I didn't say I was getting it for sure, Im going to take a look at it tomorrow and then go from there. T mobile store near me said they have some nexus 5's in house. so I'm going to go there and get a look at it.

Just because you don't like t-mobile doesn't mean everyone else gets screwed lol.

Oh I know you didn't say for sure, that's why I said "when/if".

I saw N5 at local t-mobile store, but retailers are not allowed to sell it cheaper than google. They want $450 for 16gb model not including tax... They're smoking crack lol.

On side note...
My sister and I are splitting the bill to get our mother the Mega since she saw it and said she loves it lol. Will be great gift for her since she's 65 with bad eyesight. Can't wait to see the look on her face lol.

That's an application the Mega would probably be PERFECT for, someone not so concerned with PPI. And she probably always has her purse with her to carry in it nice and safe.

Nice big screen for her to Skype with the family on too.

Wouldn't put too much assurance to VoLTE. If that's the route they go you'll probably have a small coverage area with dropped calls. They'll probably just go the incentive route for the CDMA stragglers and then shut down the whole network. To them the benefits of shutting down the network is much more valuable than the few stragglers.

Metro PCS stores in the SF Bay Area are still selling them.

I wonder how much more time we have?

I'm quite happy with mine and I'm not looking to upgrade for at least another year at minimum, even two.

This device suits my needs just fine and I can see using it for another 2 years easily if Metro supports it.

If not, would any other non-contract carrier support it?

Also makes it hard to sell if you want to upgrade if it's not going to be supported in another year or so.
