Google gets me everywhere I need to go so I don't see a need to pay money for a navigation app.

Sure if you are driving in a area where you have cell service.

I drive in and out of service areas all the time and never have any problems.

Not everyone is always in a perfect area! I never understood why people feel if they have no problem hundreds of miles away then I should have no problems..

If you need a navigation app that works offline, give NavFree a try. In North America, use the USA version.

  7. Google Nav works offline too.

Not for turn-by-turn directions and not for a 700 mile trip.

    Actually yes it does.
I drove from Ohio to Montana using Google nav on my phone. I didn't get the voice telling me where to turn but all I had to do was look at my phone.

I have CoPilot Premium USA and CoPilot Truck. Both work reasonably well, and maps are all stored on the device. You can download the entire US map, or just selected regions. The northeast maps that I'm using are under 300MB.

Be aware though that without a cellular connection, devices with only A-GPS won't necessarily work too well (or at all) when trying to determine/track your location for navigation. Even with maps stored locally and routes calculated locally, a cellular connection may still be required to make navigation usable.
