I really dislike the car home mode. It constantly freezes when I take my phone off the car mount and/or will not deactivate and I find it completely useless. Does anyone know where the magnet is located in the car dock so I can remove it and keep it from activating car home?

I think (don't quote me) that it's near the top of the phone. Alternatively, you could root your Droid and remove the car dock application.

I am not really comfortable rooting the phone yet. Once I feel there are more benefits to rooting I may go down that path. For now I much rather find and destroy the magnet.

My best bet is to use another magnet and just find out where this little bastard is hiding.

Rooting the phone = easy, safe, free
    Renaming CarDock.apk to CarDock.bak = reversible
"Removing" the magnet from the cardock = virtually non-reversible and potentially ugly (unless you're really good with a Dremel)

What if they actually "fix" the car dock app down the road? Then you'll have to buy another car dock ($25) or fix the one you Frankensteined.

Just some food for thought. You're a big boy ... do what you gotta do. :)

The problem with rooting is I haven't been able to find a comprehensive guide. I can find several forum threads but they are all very long, tens or hundreds of pages.

Are you aware of any guides available?

You're probably right, the info is pretty spotty. I'll assemble a HowTo when I get home if you want. I'm sure others would benefit as well.

Removing the magnet from the car mount is easy. If you are looking at the front of the car mount (e.g. where the phone goes) you will see the Motorola insignia. This is just a cover panel that you can easily remove with the clips on the back, roughly around the edge.
With the panel removed you can see the magnet. Then it is just up to you on how to remove it. Then you can place panel back and no one needs to know.

Can you try restarting your phone or doing a battery pull then boot before you put it in the dock? Maybe you have something that is installed/running that is interfering with the car dock or Car Home program.

I have not had any problems using my Droid with the car dock.

As an aside, I do wish that you could set the phone to automatically turn on GPS when docking in the car dock, and to turn it off when removing from the dock. If not native, I hope that Locale might add this.

Whoa! A few minutes after getting home, and the magnet that WAS in my car dock is removed. Easy peasy. And totally reversible. Now I can rename CarDock.bak back to CarDock.apk so I can use it someday ... if I should want to.

I love options. And, this forum rocks! Thanks again stevenlong!!! :)

Yes thank you Stevelong, I am going to do this right when I get home.

At first I thought the car home screen was awesome but came to realize that I never had a need for it. I almost always close car home and open one of my media players so I can listen to some tunes as I drive home from work or pull up navigation. I also find that the voice dial while in the dock just does not work for me. I believe that has something to do with the mount placement and ambient noise but it will 99% of the time not understand what I am asking it to do.

Ok, so I am sitting here staring at the magnet. Now how did you get it out?

Figure it out, had to use a tiny tiny flat head.

Wow, thank you guys, I knew I could count on someone here at these forums.

I actually flipped the magnet over so now when I put the Droid into the car dock it goes into the multimedia station mode. Having the big clock, weather and one touch to my music is mucho handy. Very cool!

I returned the $30.00 car mount and bought a generic windshield mount for $6.00. I didn't need the navigation pane to come up automatically.
