I use Setting Profiles for this.

Tasker can be set up fairly easily to do this. I have a tasker profile that turns on silent mode every night at 11:30 and turns it off at 6:30 the next morning. The advantage of using tasker is that you can use it for other automated processes as well (turn on GPS when using Maps, turn on bluetooth when playing music, etc.).

Tasker set for my daylight sleeping hours to silent, but still allows my wife and kids calls and text to play. Everyone else is silent.

Tasker will definitely do it and much, much more but comes with the cost of a bit of a learning curve (no big deal if you're used to scripting/coding/etc). There are more appliance-like apps out there if all you want is specifically just what the OP is looking for.
