I have a HTC Legend phone and I would like to get extra Apps. The obvious place (to me) is via the Google Marketplace but I am unable to get my phone to connect to Google. It bombs out when trying to contact the Google server.

This happens despite the fact that the phone has a good mobile signal and is connected to the internet via the wifi.

How else can I find Apps and get them onto my phone?

As you can probably guess I am completely new to this type of phone.

I might be wrong, but I was under the impression that the Marketplace doesn't work if you try connecting via WiFi. I think you have to connect using the phone network.

    No, you're definitely wrong ;) :)

I do most of my App installs via WiFi at home. It's quicker and saves me mobile data usage.

If your phone is bombing out when contacting Google then there's something definitely wrong. Are you going directly to the market via the inbuilt link on the phone?

That's a thought - I will try again with wifi turned off. However I need a better signal than I have at present.

Just got a reply from HTC and they say that there is a simple but drastic cure for the problem registering with Google.

    1. Backup data to SD card
    2. Factory reset
    3. Make sure that there is no local wifi signal that the phone will log onto (turn off router if necessary).
    4. Restart phone and make sure that you register with Google when asked in the setting up phase.
    5. Restart router if necessary.

As my phone was only a few days old doing a factory reset caused me little aggro so I did as instructed and the Google account was set up in seconds.

They also added that once the account has been set up it can be accessed via the mobile network or via wifi.
