Help Apps starting while talking

Since I am still new to this whole thing is it normal while talking on the phone to have apps starting up or different menus opening up? This appears to be happening when the phone rests against the side of my cheek. I can hold the phone away, but when I cradle it between my shoulder (if I need both hands) then all sorts of menus and other things start happening. Most of the time it just hangs up the phone. I figured there would be something that would prevent this from happening. Is this normal?

So no one has this issue? Am I doing something wrong or should the phone be sent back?

I'd have it looked at. When I hold my phone against my face the screen shuts off and is inactive. Does the backlight stay on when you have the phone up to your ear?
