apps taking ages to download

using googleplay trying to download apps. Taking forever, seemingly non-responsive. using a secure wifi connection

Go to speedtest.net and check your connection speed. If that's good, that's as far as you can go. If a path or a server is slow, it's slow.

If speedtest.net says that your connection is slow, figure out why or call your ISP's tech support number (and hope it's tech support, not some clerks typing in your question and reading you an answer - a good tech at my last ISP diagnosed that my router was getting too hot - and he was correct).
