I've heard a LOT of good things about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab, but looking at the various tablets mentioned on these forums I'm wondering if it's worth the wait or price. So, the question is fairly straight forward, in your opinion which is the better tablet for the price (and I don't want a bad tablet) and why is it better?

The only significant difference is that the galaxy tab has the phone function. The questions you just need to ask is, is that worth the extra $$$?

In my case, i already had a smartphone i can tether to. So the phone function is redundant.

The US one's don't even have that. Just the opportunity to pay $30 a month or so for 3g data (that most of use already get on our phone).

I think you are fooling yourself if you think an Archos tablet is "better" than the Galaxy S tab. If someone was going to give me one of these tablets...I'd take the Galaxy S Tab in a heartbeat.

Now, if I'm spending my money for one of them...that is a much different story. The Archos is a very good tablet for the price and I would NOT spend the extra $230 to get the Galaxy S Tab.

Well, I never said the Archos 101 was better than the Samsung Galaxy Tab, but it isn't that much worse. From what I've seen and read about the two, Archos 101 is the better deal when you factor in simple things like space vs. power vs. memory vs. features, which are fairly similar when compared. At this point, I'm leaning towards the Archos 101 due to the price of it, the fact I can already get it, and the simple fact that it will be a work tablet rather than a personal one, so I see no reason to spend more for something that would get beat up in Afghanistan.

I wasn't trying to imply that you had said that...it was just a general statement. The Galaxy tab IS the better tablet (I just wanted that to be clear). Now, the question is whether or not it is worth the extra $230.

I do not feel like the Galaxy Tab is reasonably priced. IMO, the Galaxy S tablet isn't a good enough tablet to justify a $500 price tag.

How does the performance compare between the Tab and the Archos? Since I can't actually play with the Archos 70, can I just compare it to the performance of the Galaxy Tab with the screen (EDIT: LCD, I know the Archos 7 is a resistive touch screen) and size of the Archos 7?

The Archos 101 and 70 are very similar in the spec department. One just has a 10" screen while the other has a 7" screen like the Galaxy Tab.

Both devices use the Cortex A8 processor @ 1.0 Ghz, but after that...samsung wins about every other category when you compare the specs. Overall, the Galaxy S tab feels faster and is better constructed.

The screens: The Archos 70 has a 800 x 480 resolution screen while the Galaxy Tab has 1024 x 600. The Archos 101 has the same resolution as the Galaxy Tab but the screen is 3" larger which means the Galaxy Tab has the most pixels per inch of either device.

The RAM: It's never good when the manufacturer does not list the RAM on their technical specs. Samsung lists theirs because the Galaxy Tab has 512MB of RAM (which is decent). Archos does not list RAM because the Archos tablets only have 256MB. This makes a HUGE performance difference. You may not notice it when you first take the Archos 101 or 70 out of the box but once you install some applications and widgets...you will notice a decent amount of lag. What does this mean? It means you need to get a task manager and kill programs running in the background. If people say "It's android, you don't need a task manager"...they are wrong cause I have to use mine to kill open apps all the time on my Archos.

The Archos is laggy like the original Motorola Droid. Even @ 1GHz with stock software the Droid was pretty laggy. Many excellent ROMs fixed much of the lag associated with the Droid but the Archos tablets do not have ANYWHERE near the support the Droid did.

The Cameras: The Galaxy Tab has two cameras. The rear camera is 3MP and the front camera is 1.3MP. The Archos tablets have only a front facing camera but the resolution is only VGA. I didn't buy my tablet for the camera...but the Archos tablets still lose here.

You can research other differences on your own, but those are the most noticeable differences. The Galaxy Tab is just a better device, with better specs, better build quality, Google market out of the box without a hack, etc...but it is almost double the price of the Archos tablets! That's where each person has to figure out what they are willing to spend on a tablet and what value they want to get for their money.

I'd buy the Archos tablets over the Samsung Tablet because the differences are not worth the extra money. Now with some of the high end dual core, tablets shown at CES...might be a different story. But I'm not ever paying more than $500 for a tablet. I simply refuse ;)

My apologies for the misunderstanding, I wasn't trying to imply that you directed the comment solely at me, or at all, just that I wished to show that I'm not biased to the cheaper tablet simply because it is cheaper. I agree, 100%, that the Samsung Galaxy is the better tablet in performance all around, but is far from being worth the price.

Hell, I'd like to see a tablet actually worth its price. Take the iPad for example, 699$ for 64 GB space, Wi-Fi, no 3G, 9.7" screen, 1024x768 resolution, and, oh my God, no RAM!? Geez Apple is stingy. I just purchased a laptop for 100$ more than that and it comes with: 500 GB space, Wi-Fi, no 3G, 18.4" screen, 1680x945 resolution, and 4 GB RAM! Sure, iPad has the size (it's small afterall), the ppi (131.9587628865979 vs. 104.7578137946745), and the brand name. The laptop has the level of video capable, nearly 8x the storage space, a FAR better sound system, and I know the iPad doesn't have anywhere near 4 GB of RAM (iPad has 256 MB). Just from those points, iPad 3 vs. laptop 4.

I'm sorry, I got a little carried away, but I trust my point is clear. For the ridiculous prices of tablets I could buy two laptops/netbooks with better specs than the tablets.

The real test between tablets is their comparability against other tablets. iPad vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab, Samsung. iPad vs. Archos 101, I'd have to say their about even. Both have major likes and major dislikes.

Thank you for the feedback, though. I think I'll go with the Archos 101, though it'll have to wait a month before I can order it. ^^'

For what it's worth...I feel the Archos 70 and 101 are worth the price you pay. They are not perfect but I'm replying to your comment from my Archos 70 right now. I'm happy to have it and don't feel like it is lacking. Just wish it had 512 MB of RAM :D

The small difference in the screen, the extra camera, and the difference in RAM are definately not worth the extra $200. I could buy an ARCHOS 101 and 70 for the price of one Galaxy Tab and it'll still be 7" running the same exact OS, accessing the same exact apps, and doing the same exact thing. If I were going to pay more, I would just jump on the Xoom when it comes out from Sams for $539.

I vote Archos 101....for now, and for the money. The Galaxy Tab for the money = NO. It's not that much more real estate than my Evo.

If someone were willing to give me one of these two, I would take the Galaxy Tab and sell it to buy something better for the money they are asking for the Galaxy Tab. IMO

After using archos 101, i do find that its s more laggy than samsung galaxy tab. I think the ram does make a big difference. But i am using it mainly for reading pdf, 10 inch screen is much better than 7. U have to see what is ur need. The 7 inch tab may be more handy.

Hi there, i have just purchased the archos 101, and i for one think it is a great tablet, fair enough it is not the best of tablets out there, but i would'nt even think about buying a tablet 7" it would be to small.

For me, the 7" size of the Archos 70 is great. I've never thought it was too small and I've never wished it was any bigger. But I'm sure I'd be happy with the 101 too...

Point being...Other manufacturers could learn a lesson here that offering multiple sizes like Archos has done is a good thing. In a world where every company is trying to differentiate themselves with similar devices...offering multiple choices is a good place to start. ;)

Of the options presented, excluding "You must be high", and assuming iPad meant iPad 2; I said iPad.

I also like the fact that Archos has put out several differing sizes. I wish more manufacturers would do so.

Even the 2.8" screen on the Archos 28 serves a purpose for many (A rather cheap media player).
