If I add a contact on my hero ~ should I expect the contact to upload to my Google contacts automatically? They download to my phone in seconds but they never go to my Google contacts.

Make sure when you enter the contact on your phone you Select "Google" as contact type, not "Phone" otherwise it wont sync with Google contacts.

It's saved as a google contact and it's still not showing up in my gmail contacts. Do I need to do something to trigger a "sync". My phone automatically downloads contacts from gmail.

    Try:

Menu > Settings > Data Sync > Google , make sure everything is checked, then uncheck and re check the Contacts box. Wait about a minute and see if that works.

I have the same problem as above and have tried unchecking then rechecking to no avail.
Contacts on the phone get deleted with the next sync
    Any thoughts?

Wow! That sounds like a really personal question.

Just kidding. It should work both ways. During my usage of Google contacts, anything I have updated on my computers in my contacts has been reflected on my Sprint HTC Hero and vice versa. I hope this helps!
