1. Are you ready for the Galaxy S20? Here is everything we know so far!

Are there any really simple apps that you would like?

I picked up the Droid on launch day, and after playing with it for a few minutes, I really wanted to write some apps. I am putting this in the Droid forum (opposed to a more general Android forum) because I like to test code on hardware/devices I actually own, and since I own a Droid and have Android 2.0, there is obviously one device I can test it on.

I am a college student/aspiring software developer, and normally work with C and C++. I know a lot of people have said it is easier going from C++ to Java than it is going from Java to C++, but regardless, I will be learning Java + the SDK over my winter break from college.

I have a few app ideas, but in situations like this, I like trying to start off basic and work my way up.

To learn SDKs, I find it is always easier to just sit down and test stuff out and play around. I am just curious if anyone has any SIMPLE app ideas that they would like to see implemented, so I could try to help people out while I am learning the SDK? If I do get any ideas from here, the apps will be free on the market (once I write them), and you will be given credit (the source code will be publicly available as well).

If you recommend something, there is no guarentee I will pick it, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask around. The Android community is awesome, and I would just like to do my part and contribute some basic apps while learning the SDK.

    Thank you for any suggestions!

A new power widget? I'm not much on the black one.

The white one I could read even in daylight with the screen turned all the way down.

    And a complicated idea:

A full screen widget that can contain other widgets, and show radar based on current location either via cell tower or gps.

I'm no developer, but I'd LOVE to see that. Be able to see my radar view (I work outside as a cable guy) at a glance, but not lose any real estate.

Maybe an animated background? I dunno how it'd have to be done.

There are a few power widgets in the market already (I am assuming by power widget you mean battery widget?). Just do a really general search in the market, "battery", and it should pull a whole list up.

A widget that sets the phone from full ring to vibrate with a single switch. Instead of using the volume buttons to set it.

I mean the one that toggles brightness, gps, wifi, bt.

I know there are individual ones for each, but I want what I want, and I haven't seen it yet.

Which is a single widget that I can put toggle for lots of things on.

Say, brightness, wifi, gps, ringer, bt, pick your thingy.

    that'd be way cool

But I understand why you might not want to tackle that, as it's been done & done & done again.

Beautiful widgets includes a vibration widget, as well as silent, GPS, Wifi, and Bluetooth. You should check it out. They look very nice and only take up one icon spot.

Id like to see a app/widget where it will show you your 1X signal and 3G signal with 2 rows like verizon dumb phones does

How about a bridge... of sorts.

I have "GPS Tracker" by instamapper which tracks other phones in real time... updates every 5 seconds. I would love to see it somehow integrated into the maps app so i don't have to deal with the horrid horrid horrid "Latitude" app that is built in.

Since Instamapper uses google maps on their website to track real time... from a non-dev standpoint, it seems like it wouldn't be overly tough to do.

A widget that would turn the camera button into a 'next track' button without waking the screen. :D

I've been looking for a single 1x1 button widget that will put my Droid to sleep, no luck so far. Simple enough, right? :)

an app to be able to put my name on the lock screen. I don't need any other information. Just my name. Don't want to change the screen in any way. I just want to name my phone like I have been able to do with every other phone I have ever owned. Maybe there is already an app for this and if there is I don't know but that isn't saying much.lol

Also an app that lets me record a small message to be said every time my phone is unlocked. An example would be like the HAL computer in 2001 a space odyssey when Hall goes "Hello Dave".

I don't know how simple this would be, but I would love an app that lets me lock/password protect all of my phone except for the dial pad... I guess sort of like a lockscreen that lets you access the dial pad only.

I think it would be cool, well nerdy, but having a rotary dialer. Surely you remember those old phones where you had to spin the wheel to the right number then it would spin back, and repeat. I know dialers tend to be a PITA so this probably would be difficult. And its pure novelty, as a dialpad is so much faster. But with my old school ring tone and a rotary dialer.... oh boy! :D I just love the idea of mixing ancient technology with today's

In the market place . download the app called SilentMode onOff . This app is a widget that goes from volume on to off just by touching the widget . unfortunatly it doesnt go to vibrate but maybe soon im told.

    Two simple app ideas:
    1. an app to simply toggle the blinking green led light in the upper lefthand corner of the device on and off.
    2. an app to simply toggle on and off the backlighting for the 4 hard keys (back, menu, home, and search).
These two issues prevent me from using the Droid as a bedside clock.

Ok this is super simple - I want something that when activated, locks the physical ringer switches on the sides of the phone. (but only for the ringer, not call volume, media volume etc) I generally leave my ringer set to vibrate all the time and I find that I accidentally hit that volume button a lot, often silencing the phone without intending to and missing calls/texts. I'll gladly pay for this if you do it.

Mimic the way BlackBerry uses "profiles". :D

I'd love to see a better htc-like home/time/weather widget. Here are my complaints with what I've seen so far (Beautiful Widgets, etc.)

    - No analog clock skins- hate the flip dial clock
    - No weather alerts
    - Grossly inaccurate temperature/weather conditions displayed (off by > 10 degrees)

Edit: I know there are better weather widgets out there, but I'm looking for the all-in-one home widget.

no idea if this is simple or not, but i'd really like a redial button! :)

Ring Toggle - great little app.

Contact Owner - also great. Has a warning when you launch it but runs flawlessly on my PC.

I'd like an app that makes the volume key jump forwards/backwards by track if you hold it down for a second or so, rather than tapping it to change volume. Blackberry works that way and it is really nice...works when phone is awake or asleep.
