So I've been researching new apps to get, and I came across the slew of people recommending Astro File Manager. It seems to me though that the "my files" stock app that comes with my Captivate does everything I need it to do; delete files, install .apk files..

What does Astro do that the stock My Files doesn't? Does anything make it better than bloat?

Get the free version of Astro. It's ad supported but as functional as the paid version.

My Files can't handle zip archives. Astro can unzip files and create new archives. It can also handle tar and gz files.

This. I was able to download the 2.1 Flash APK (which was a ZIP file on the server) on my captivate, unzip with Astro and then install it, all from the phone.
