Then I can just go ahead and install TWRP on top, right?

Originally yes, until I started installing custom ROMs that were already rooted, in which case rooting using the above method was unnecessary.

Yeah, I am not ready to go that far "on the first date" so I will take my time and root first, take a recovery image then start messing with stuff later.
I saw a lot of bricked devices, and by merely just Updating the phone bricked them after the recovery, that's scary as hell.

Update should be removed/disabled on recovery installed devices, anyway to do that?
