Root [AT&T] Help Rooting

Hello, So I am new to the android world and i want to get full customization to my galaxy s4, but i have no idea were to start and frankly i dont understand most of the language that is associated with the root. So if anyone could help me with some simple instructions, and with all the requirements to rooting.

Did you get the new update last night? If so you can't. Also rooting itself won't change a whole lot besides allowing you to install some apps you couldn't before and installing some spots you couldn't before

I did not do the update because i was sacred that the update might interfere with the rooting.
