Working on changing my boot animation on my X (not rooted) I followed all the steps but get stuck on the reboot. CMD says this operation is not permitted. USB debugging is checked, and the phone is in usb mode. Any ideas?

You should just be able to put the bootanimation.zip in /data/local/ with that exact file name and it will work since the system looks there first before /system/media

I get as far as where im supposed to do the adb reboot, but it says it cant be complete. so the boot animation never actually changed. Everything looks golden until that point

I do have astro, i'll have to try to figure that out. It just seemed easier to do it through windows. I tried to manually reboot the phone (not thru CMD prompt, but the boot animation did not change.) Like i said, everything looks like it worked until i get to the reboot part, which it says operation not permitted.

GOOD! I'm glad you got it. Just search around there are a plethora of boot animations out there.

Huh. I didn't know you could change the boot animation without root. You learn something everyday.

Yeah. I'm with Steven. Care to share how you did that? I am not rooted (yet) and would like to change the boot animation.

There is a program called Android SDK. This program allows you to perform certain activities that normally require root such as: Taking screen shots, loading custom boot animations and other activities.

I myself have not tried Android SDK, however.

I used SDK for screen shots, but after getting 2.2, it stopped working and I haven't messed with it since. As for swapping boot animations with it, anyone have experience? If it's easy enough, I will try to mess with SDK again...or just root! ;)

I work in an office. It has a window, but it isn't
In a house, near some mountains.
you can also use adb to push any bootanimation.zip to data/local. data/local does not require a r/w mount

Are you using the default Eris boot animation where the Android comes up from the bottom, then from the side and waves? Get me a copy of the Zip file and I should be able to resize it for you.

This one? Quality reduced for posting.
