i just joined audible and i used my first book purchase to revisit and old fantasy novel series called the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen R. Donaldson. the first book is called the Unbeliever. it is a great fantasy series that does draw on Lord of the Rings. but the hero is more of an anti-hero of sorts. i read it in high school, but i keep re-reading the series on off. i never have listened to an audio book before, but i find the format pretty cool. i can put my headphones on and do work will listening to the story unfold. it is definitely different.

just kind of want to know what else is out there as far as audio books goes.

anybody use audible? anybody have any suggestions for the next read? there are 9 huge volumes that mr Donaldson wrote so it will take me a while to finish. never the less, i'm curious as to what to listen to next.

yes, but i trust my AF family here for their suggestions. i do not always trust amazon reviews. plus i get great suggestions of things i would never had thought of......like the Communist Manifesto. never would have thought to read, but i might consider it now.

so is there anything you like from audible you would like to share?

Awesome, I should try it out, and if they are for free, then they can be for free.
I might listen to them when I play some video games, or even just to have it out to listen with.

i would not listen to an audio book and play video games. there would be too many distractions. sometimes while driving i miss some details and have to rewind back a bit. audible is like netlfix .....sort of. you pay a monthly fee and you can listen to an audio book as many times as you want. but you do have to pay for them....they are not free. but with each month you get 1 credit which can be used to purchase a title. you can save credits to be used for later.

you have your gold subscription, $15.95 per month, which gives you 1 credit per month or the platinum, 22.95 per month, which gives you 2 credits per month.

I'm a bit late to the conversation; I've read all the Covenant books, The first book is Lord Foul's Bane. I haven't heard the audiobook version yet, how is the narration?

I think my favorite narrations so far are the Robert Inglis reads of The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J R R Tolkien, the Millennium trilogy (The Girl with the Dragon Tattooby Stieg Larsson, and the first couple Ender books by Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game, The Speaker for the Dead)

TBH, I just canceled my Audible annual membership: I get most of my audiobooks from the library, and the cost per credit is excessive for my taste. I may renew if it drops below $12 per, but I don't need to buy any more books at the moment.

the narration is not bad, not the greatest, but it is one of my all time favorite fantasy books, so it was easy for me to follow along. and i agree with the Lord of the Rings narration. i might want to try listening the Steig Larson's books. i have read the trilogy, but never read the ones published after his untimely death. might have to give the whole series a listen.

but first i need to replace my lost galaxy buds before i can listen to audio books again.

Spouse and I watched the Spider's Web movie... the story was okay, but that was definitely not the Lisbeth Salander that Larsson created.

I'm just checking the merits of Audible. Recently retired it seemed like a nice option from TV and streamed tunes. It seems a bit expensive. One book a month credit per subscription seems a bit high and then perusing titles to purchase they are priced high as well. I don't think one book a month would satisfy me. Is it as expensive as it seems to listen to a few books a month or am I not clearly seeing how a subscription works?

I just canceled my subscription last month. I get most of my audiobooks from the library, and so I only bought from Audible when a specific one was not available through any of my public libraries. I would also make sure that any audiobook I paid a credit for cost more than the per-credit price. I agree, audiobooks are expensive, and considering Audible's near-monopoly, I can't tell how much of a markup Bezos is putting on it.

I was a bit shell shocked at the cost. I partied with a long time friend and his wife last weekend and they are both all over Audible. They talked like it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. It piqued my interest so I was checking it out. I guess it's back to my tablet and kindle app.

I was looking at a author by the name of Michael McCloskey, he looks like he has some good ebooks on Squidlord.com and The Rovan looks pretty interesting.

ok i just finished the first 3 in Danoldson's White Gold Wielder trilogy and thought it was ok. the narrator was not bad, but i thought that he lacked emotion at times which made it boring at times.

i just started Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series in the Wizard's First Rule and the narration is sooooo much better. i have read the series many times. this is the first time listening to an audio version of it.

if you have not read the books i highly suggest you do. it is a really good fantasy series. Terry Goodkind does a great job at character development.
