Is there any app or widget that allows quick enable/disable of background data rather than going the long way?

CurveFish do nice little widgets for controlling various features, might be worth sifting through the market to see if there's one for that (can't remember off the top of my head.)

    CurveFish Available widgets:

    • AirplaneMode
    • AutoRotate
    • AutoSync
    • Bluetooth
    • Brightness Level
    • GPS [shortcut]
    • LockScreen
    • Network 2G/3G [shortcut]
    • ScreenTimeout
    • SilentMode
    • WiFi
They don't have a switch for background data. I searched through the market many times, after which I posted here.

As far as I know, there isn't any widget. I've been looking for it since the day I got my Galaxy. For now, I use BetterCut. With it I created a shortcut to Data Sync on my home panel. It saves the trouble of going through settings to reach the necesarry section.

But most cases I only want background data enabled without auto sync.

AnyCut is the free version of BetterCut, but I think it has the options you need. Data Sync is in "Activities" when you try to add new shortcuts.

You can turn on auto-sync, but untick all google apps beneath it. This way auto-sync setting would have no effect, therefore Power Control widget will be essentially switching background for you.

That's double the trouble. I felt its better to use AnyCut, make a shortcut and finish it in one step.

Why on earth is it double the trouble? You only need to untick Google apps once, and after that the widget does everything for you with one click.

When you can just create a shortcut, and tick background data. Why on earth should I turn on auto sync, then need to untick Google apps, when I just need background data?

    Are you even listening?

    Let's try one more time...

In Data Sync you turn on BD (background data) and AS (Auto-Sync), and tick off all Google Apps (because as you said in 'most cases [you] only want background data enabled without auto sync', therefore you don't want the phone to sync). This is a one time operation!

Then you just use the Power Control widget to switch BD+AS with one click. Although it turns on AS along with BD, the phone will not actually AS, as you've ticked off Google apps.

Your method consists of (1) pushing the anycut shortcut, (2) waiting for Data Sync screen to load (though it is relatively fast), (3) ticking off BD, (4) confirming that you want to turn it off. Whereas my method is much faster and only requires pushing one button on the widget.

ive tested this, it doesnt actually work as you are explaining.

if you have turned off all autosync features and turned off background data the light will be off on power controll. (this is fine and to be expected)

you go to market and it asks you to enable BD, or you can enable it manually. you will see the green light is on. (great this is just as we want it)

you then click it on the power control widget and it goes grey, you check the settings just to make sure and you see everything is off. (once again working how we want)
then you/we assume that its remembering your settings and only controlling the BD data part as you've unticked as autsync features.
if you then use the widget to turn on background data and go back into settings you will see that its enabled absolutely everything including the previously unticked autosynch settings. (not how we want it)

now i dont mind this as i only turn it on quickly for market and then its back off but i can see how its not wanted or desired behaviour

I've just double checked. It *does* remember the tick status of Google Apps on my phone.

Does the Galaxo ROM have something to with it?

Hmm... I have not tried that on vanilla JC6. Perhaps Galaxo is the reason it works for me, however I don't see why would Drakaz give any attention to this detail.

Rastaman, on which firmware are you currently? Update your profile )

    ok actually it does work

the steps i took was not enabling autosync and unticking. instead i just unticked them with autosync
my bad for not reading thoroughly

    Informale's method does work perfectly
