we wanted to put a new background image on the homescreen etc. made a square picture. worked fine.
ah but.... when we put text on it the problems began.
in horizontal way...if we put the text closer to the top than about an inch, the text vanished- we assume off the top, maybe the tablet magnified the image. if we put the text just lower than an inch from the top it was happy. we were not happy. we now have a no text gap of an inch or so near the top.
why is putting text there on an image a NO NO?

You're dealing with a square image fitting a rectangle screen, so that's the problem

Use an app like Image 2 wallpaper, from the play store, that will show you and explain exactly how images can be used in both portrait and landscape configuration....

for years i have used a square background image with text on tablets.

To get the width, the top and bottom of an image will be cropped off, if viewing in landscape mode. Both sides would be cropped off if viewing in portrait mode.
That's if the original image is a square.

Unless there's magic going on, thats how it works.

The UI has six choices to fit wallpaper:

1 Enlarge a smaller image to fit, ignore proportion.
2 Shrink a larger image to fit, ignore proportion.
3 Either of the previous 2, but crop 2 sides to maintain proportion.
4 Image is perfect resolution and size, do nothing.
5 Image is perfect in one dimension, crop to maintain proportion.
6 Leave bars on two sides of the image.

You should be able to look at the original image, compare it to the wallpaper, and intuitively 'see' what is happening. For instance, if you're using an image of Jupiter, and Jupiter on the wallpaper is oval instead of round, the wallpaper is stretched to fit.

If Jupiter fills the middle third of the image, vertically, but almost the entire vertical dimension on the wallpaper, the top and bottom are being cropped. The best way to deal with text placement is to change the resolution and size of the image to that of the screen, and then add text.

It should work right then.
