Is there anyway to back up the app data before I unlock the boot loader and have to do a full wipe? I'm use to my previous inredible that I could root without having to wipe.

I didn't try before I rooted but maybe apps2sd (free). It saves your apps to the sd card.

Titanium backup, ROM Toolbox, and I'm sure a few more apps all have this ability. You need temp root for them to work but they will work before unlocking. The unlocking process itself will do a factory reset/wipe .

I did a temp root using CleanTOOL, downloaded TitaniumBackup, and backed up "user apps and system data". I haven't done the HTC unlock and restore yet so I can't say this is a bullet-proof solution. Soon I will get brave. =:)
