Is there a way to extend the time that the backlight stays on whilst making a phone call?
Sure, I know that you can press the 'end call' button to end a call, but about three or four rings into the call, the backlight goes out, meaning that the on-screen 'end call' option is disabled, presumably also meaning that turning on the speakerphone during a call is going to need some tactile finger acrobatics.

There is a widget- Screebl that monitors when the phone is held vertically and keeps the backlight on until the phone is placed in a horizontal position again. I hope this helps!

I'll have a look at that.
But what if you wanted to make a call when you're in bed?

Another quirk that contributes to my love/ hate relationship with Android...

I use an application called 'KeepScreen' which can be found via the Market. Generally works quite well for me. You just run it as a service on the phone in the background and tell it which applications you'd like to keep the display on for.

    Yep, Screebl is the one!

Keepscreen is ok for non-call activities, but unless I'm missing something it does nothing for the screen timeout on calls.

    Thanks for that!

Ahh, I didn't know. Haven't used it so with calls yet and have only very recently found trying to use touch-tone features on calls to be an annoyance!
