I am new to this forum, and to the Samsung Epic phone... I do love this phone, but I am wondering how to backup my contacts to my computer, if possible... Any hints?

I believe contacts back up via gmail but you can also send it as a .vcf (I think) to the SD card. I believe it's in the menu options when you're looking at your contacts.

I'm trying to back up my contacts and am having difficulties. I synced the contacts with my gmail account and after the "lengthy" sync, I still didn't find my contacts anywhere in my gmail account. Why?
I was also worried about backing up my contacts to the sd card. It asked me if I want to export the contacts to the sd card. But, I'm not sure what will happen. Will my contacts only be available through my sd card and will be deleted from my internal memory? Or will it stay on the phone and just back it up on the card?

Don't worry. Use export. It just backs up to sd. It doesn't delete anything from the phone's memory.
