I am not familiar with the VZW backup as I am not on VZW. I use gmail for contacts, dropbox and google + for photos. Sms backup + for sms. All synced with gmail. Storage ? part of that is the OS of the phone. It takes up space and then the rest will be apps and so forth. You can always get an sd card and move what you can to that to help with space as well
