Basic structure

I have managed to root my S2 and install CYM 9 (more luck than judgment) because I wasn't happy with ICS when Kies updated me from GB
but i am still a bit confused about the way things work. Maybe a daft question
but do I still have ICS on the phone? and what about Kernals what part do they play in all this. Its probably basic stuff to some but I would like more of a picture of whats going on .
