Hi there - welcome to the forums!

I am not 100% sure, but I know that Android has stuff running in the background. You shouldn't need to kill tasks and, as of firmware 2.2, shouldn't use a task killer - the OS is pretty good at that on it's own.

If you have any specific questions on the Vibrant, you'll get the best answers from other users in the device's sub-forum (Samsung Vibrant - Android Forums)

Hope you enjoy your time here!!

    Welcome to the Android Forums!

Android is an operating system whose core is based on Linux. In all operating systems you will have an abundance of running services in the background... most are OS components but some may be specific apps.

Normally it's not necessary to stop these running services...

    Welcome to Android Forums!

Most likely your battery issues stem from you stopping necessary services. It's really important to understand how Android works and why task killers are to be avoided. If you read the first post of this thread, you should get the idea.
