    ive notice my battery will drain about 40% overnight with it not being used, (but still switched on).

    is it normal to drain that much?

    cheers

    How many accounts do you have set to sync, and how often? (Email, social networking, etc.)

    Is Wifi turned on? Is it connected or not?

    Is 3G turned on?

    What is the cell signal like in that location?

    Use an app like Timeriffic to set the phone to Airplane mode over night. You will have then about 2% usage overnight.

    And won't be able to make/receive calls :)

    Better to diagnose the issue, IMO.

    wifi = 1min every 4hrs
    3g = off
    sync settings are = background data ticked
    auto-sync unticked

    accounts = google
    news (cant this be deleted)
    stocks (cant this be deleted)
    weather

    cell signal is hit and miss

    i use 'mini info' app which tells me the battery 'usage' and this says display is the highest, however, since i updated to Gingerbread the 'history' wont show....

    if i unticked background data would that sort it?

    Turning background data off might help, depending on whether anything is using it. You say 3G is off, but is 2G data enabled?

    The one you can't help is cell signal, but if that's very marginal then the phone will drain faster - much faster if it's constantly losing signal. 40% overnight sounds severe even so, though I have seen such a thing when I left my phone right on the edge of coverage for a day (but I really do mean right on the edge).

    What do you mean? You wake up every 4 hours and manually turn it on for 1 minute?

    It doesn't matter if they can be deleted. Are they set to sync automatically? Check the settings. If they aren't syncing, they won't do anything and won't use battery.

    Probably the biggest issue, as Hadron noted. Nothing you can do about this.

    Is the display on at night? If not, you're seeing usage from during the day. You need to reset your usage statistics (sometimes plugging in and then unplugging will do that) and then let it sit overnight without using it. Check the stats in the morning.

    the wifi is switched on and off automatically by Green Power.
    the 'sync auto' box is not ticked so that can be forgotten about. cool.

    i found out that turning off background data will stop me connecting to the market even on wifi, so that has to stay on.

    i do normally plug it in over night but thought this might be something that could be addressed for those nights when it cant be plugged in.
    i guess the bad signal is one problem that cant be helped, however i will be moving soon so it will be interesting to see if its any different in the new place.

    ill also reset everything at night to see if display comes up as a high user in the morning.

    thanks for all the help

    Sounds to me like a rogue app is keeping the phone awake.

    40% is almost certainly an app actively running and draining the battery. Check the running apps list, do you have a lot of stuff in there?

    RE: the bad signal - have you tried setting the phone to GSM only?
    At home I am surrounded by hills & get slightly erratic 3g signal, but great 2g (perfectly fine for calls & texts) and, like you, use WiFi so setting GSM only has no negative effects for me.
    Just an extra thing you can try, even if it is only for 1 night to rule out the signal being part of the cause :)

    He stated that 3G is off. This would help if he had 3G data enabled, but the fact is the phone will try hard to maintain some type of connection to the cell tower in order to receive calls/text messages.

    An app called spare parts under one of the tabs, battery usage- Partial wake usage.

    take a look there for any apps that may be keeping the phone partially awake.

    after 2 nights of it being unplugged (charged during the day) it as only dropped a 5-6 % each night, so i can only assume it wasnt the phone looking for a better signal but a rouge app that i have deleted (i dont know which app as i try them out randomly and delete)

    so i guess ill never know what app it was..

    yeh the 3g is always off unless i switch it on when out and need internet.

    ill try that 'spare parts' app out of interest.

    thanks for all the help.

    I wasn't talking about 3G/2G data, but the actual cell connection type. When set to 'Auto' my phone connects to the nearest 3G cell tower (which is a fair distance away) & gets an erratic signal hovering around 1 to 2 bars. When I set it to 'GSM only' it connects to one of the many 2G cell towers near to me & gets a permanent 'full' connection - it makes a noticeable difference to the battery life I get at home.
    I note the OP has ruled out the connection strength as being the cause, anyway, but just wanted to clarify what I meant. Apologies for not being clear :)

    If the OP has Gingerbread he could go to Settings > About Phone > Battery Use and then click on the graph on top. That will show if the phone is being kept awake all night or not. A solid blue bar under awake means that the phone is staying awake, it should be only tiny little bits of blue every once and a while. I was recently on vacation and mine was off the hook all night, and with WiFi on in a weak signal area. I lost about 1 or 2 percent overnight with syncing occuring ever 3-4 hours in various apps.

    only 3% drop again last night and the blue awake bar was only on now and then, so it looks like the problem has resolved itself.

    thanks again.
