It's a long-established text markup language, similar in many respects to the HTML used to render text on web pages, that is commonly supported by forum software such as XenForo (used here at AF). Like HTML it uses pairs of [tags] [/tags] to format content.
It dates back to when ANSI-based bulletin boards started moving to web-based WSIWYG front ends, hence the "BBcode" name.
