Benefit to rooting 2.1 Hero

hey there i have been trying to decide if i want to root my hero but cant really see the huge benefit to it what exactly do i gain from rooting it?

main benefits include, but are not limited to, being able to remove all the extra programs sprint installs, having more control over customizing things like lock screens and the launcher format, having the ability to overclock if you desire to get every last drop out of the processor, and being able to install programs directly to your sd card.

you can remove all that sprint bloatware, move your apps to the sd card, put a custom ROM on, overclock, theme, wireless tether (and a whole bunch of other things I'm sure are slipping my mind)

tethering seems to be a great benefit, but wouldn't sprint find out if i was tethering and charge me tethering fees?

It is doubtful they would know you were tethering unless you did it like everyday and your data usage skyrocketed or something.
