Ive tried a few apps, but they all come with there flaws, and I'm still yet to find one I like.

I've tried loads myself, but I've found none better than Soccer Scores Pro. It's a little fiddly to set up, but once done it just works and has push notifications in this Pro version, but there is a free option if you want to try that first.

You could always use ESPN Scorecenter. I use it and It lets me know by notification when the game starts, halftime, and the final score

I use 'Live Score Addicts'. You can set it to show only the leagues/cups you want, with your selected team's games always at the top of the list. Score updates are very fast and best of all, it's free!

I use TheScore mobile. I love the widget. It also allows you to set alerts for certain teams or games, so you are notified of certain events like game start/end or each scoring play. For football, they have alerts for turnovers and red zone.

I think we may be talking different types of football here. :)
