I bought the Best Buy Geek Squad Black Tie Protection and was informed by the employee there that it was a 2-year replacement plan. From what I'm reading in the brochure, it's a replacement after 4 repairs. Still in doubt, I asked them and on the receipt, it says 'GSBTP-R', and in the employee's defense, said that the R represented 'replacement' as opposed to 'service'.

I'm feeling uncertain about this because they can backfire me when I need to use the insurance that the 'R' can be signified as 'repair'.

Did anyone else buy into the Best Buy Geek Squad Black Tie Protection for and was told the same thing? Has anyone bought this plan for other Best Buy products and received replacements?

EDIT: I also asked her about logistics and she said I can bring it to the store and get a replacement same day.

Don't listen to what they say, only go by what the paperwork says. They are forced to sell those protection plans (I know - I used to work there). They will require you to be without your phone for days at a time while they try to fix your phone. They will not replace it the first time you have a problem with it - believe me.

Do you know if it's too late to cancel the plan? I got it on 7/19. Thanks for the reply

Edit: Found their site with all the information. 30-day refund or prorated after 30 days.

I had the black tie thing for my intercept. The keyboard was cracking so I took it in on Friday the 15th and they gave me a store credit for the retail price of the intercept plus tax. I used it to buy the Triumph. And paid the difference. They never once mentioned repairing the phone

How much was the protection plan? I bought the $5.00 p/m through VM.

I checked with BB again and the brochure they gave me was outdated. They say the way prepaids work is if there is anything wrong with it, broken screen, faulty whatever, they replace prepaids on the spot and do not repair them.

The sales rep also mentioned they have already had quite a few returns and mentioned the problems I've experienced with 3 returned phones already.

The replacements also work for an unlimited amount of returns for the 1st year and if it's replaced on the second then the plan is fulfilled and you can buy another 2 years on it.

Anyways, $40 seems pretty good on something I've already returned so many times on it being defective as I'm sure more problems will come up on this product. Hopefully it gets updated soon so I can exchange it for one without so many problems as I still get the autofocus camera clicking.

Replacement plans replace your item. Service plans attempt to repair your item. The replacement plan is great. You will get 100% refund plus tax via store credit.

Yeah like I was saying. That's what they did for me no questions asked.

Yep, when I got mine a week ago Thursday the guy tried to sell me the insurance but couldn't get it to come up so kind of halted during the middle of his spiel leaving an uncomfortable silence... before I quipped that I wasn't interested anyways, but in retrospect squaretrade want c. $130 for a 2y plan so $40 is sounding decent IF it's replacement... Especially as I plan to keep the MT until they come out with multi-cores, which I'm not really expecting to next year as it's looking like their plan is now to lag high end by a year but that's kind of flakey w/only about 1y worth of data, and they seemed to have been erratic on the blackberries, but I'm almost positive that those will go away before long.

RIM either finally taking the high dive or possibly someone like Google gobbling them up(backdoor to that Nortel patent consortium unless they have a nasty little clause in their consortia contract...)

From the BB website regarding the replacement program:

I was just told today that prepaids don't get repaired and are replaced and that only the contract phones get repaired. Of course he didn't have any documentation on it and the pamphlet apparently that was handed out doesn't contain anything like that for prepaids. I'm going to call up the black tie protection plan and try to get some documentation as on the website it's not detailed either. Regardless, I have 30 days to find a satisfactory answer and if I can't get any documentation on the matter I'll just return it.

Just to clear this all up:

I work in Best Buy Mobile currently and have been for three years. The protection plan used for the Triumph (and any prepaid phone sold through Best Buy) uses a GSBTP-R, also known as a PRP (Product Replacement Plan). If you were to redeem the protection at a Best Buy location the associate would give you a brand new phone. There is absolutely NO repairing of prepaid phones and there has never been. If the phone is no longer carried (lets say, in a year theoretically) you would be offered a phone of comparable value. Lets say the new device they offer you is $250, you would get the brand new device as well as a $50 credit being that the Triumph is $300.
As for what the plan covers, it's pretty vague. Best Buy is the kind of place where what is written on paper is generally not always followed to deliver a customer experience. Physical damage is not technically covered by the protection plan. However, customers get fulfillments on damaged prepaids all the time. Same goes for water damage, its not covered, but I'd be surprised if you didn't get a replacement. The reason for this variation is because Best Buy employees are told about many different policies and it really varies by specific district and territory. For example, one district may see an overflow of prepaid PRP fulfillments and get strict about it, while others might not give a shit if you exchange a soaking wet, deformed device. Like I said, its vague. But what most don't realize is that Best Buy really tries to take care of the customer, so if someone tries to deny you physical damage coverage, just speak to a manager. 9 times out of 10 they'll get you a new one.
Lastly, a few people in this thread are confusing the PRP with the GSBTP or PSP (Product Service Plan). In Best Buy Mobile it's reserved only for contract devices. It's either a monthly or outright price and varies by retail phone cost. Like I said, nothing about this plan has anything to do with the Triumph. Some people have had bad experiences with the PSP in the past which is why you'll hear a lot of people complain about it. Best Buy has used different repair companies and policies throughout the years. As recently as last year it was taking over a month for phones to be repaired. The system that's now used implements a "rapid exchange" which takes about three days. There's also never a deductible and an unlimited amount of "rapid exchanges".
Not every protection plan is worth it at Best Buy. However, on the prepaids you get the best deal. They are super cheap (even for a $300 phone) and have the least amount of hassle involved. Why go with Virgin's insurance? It's $50 for the year and you pay a deductible. Hope I cleared some things up!

Try to get a new phone from BB, when your old one is lost or stolen!
IMHO insurance is still better deal.

Wife and I have used the plans to replace both of our blackberries, twice, and used it to replace my intercept with my Optimus. I really had problems with all of these phones and Bb replaced them all. Btw, Dust under the screen is covered.

Everyone should really buy the PrP plan since bryaslak has confirmed that this is the plan sold for the triumph (and not the PsP)

I have had nothing but great replacement experiences with bestbuy and PrP's in the past for several different items.

Question for you guys. Given that we can buy third party protection plans from places other than where we bought our phones, is it possible to buy a best buy replacement plan if you bought your phone somewhere else? I wanna say no duh but you never know.

*** got my answer- you need a bb receipt

We have this. Geek Squad - Locked&Found: Return Your Lost Device - Protect Your Data

Works pretty well, especially for lost.

Lol, not widely known but one of the cooler things covered.

Not for any phone but the iPhone. You can buy an iphone from Walmart, go over to best buy and put on the protection plan. Maybe one day other phones will be covered as well. You could always go and see if they'll do it with the Triumph: say you paid in cash and they never gave you a receipt. They have no way of knowing and will gladly accept some extra money.
