hey guys, I wanted to upgrade my evo v to the sgs3 by turning in my evo v which has the best buy protection plan. When I got the evo v, I turned in my optimus v which had the same plan. Only difference is I was able to turn in my optimus v and got credit for the full price I paid. I paid $230 for my evo v and best buy only wants to credit me $100. They said they changed their policy. Seems like I could get more selling it myself. Also I will be going on vacation pretty as soon (actually packing right now)so I apologize in advanced if I'm not able to respond. What do guys think?

Did they say why they're only giving you 100? Is it cause the Evo V went down in value. I remember when you could just get the full credit for your phone towards another, but I don't know if credit is what you paid or what it costs now.

He acknowledged the fact that they used to give people full credit for their phone but then stated that they no longer do that because at the time of trade in the phone wasn't worth the full credit. Said it was a new policy but I would want to hear if anyone else has encountered this. And yes, according to him my evo v is only worth $100 due to going down in value.

I see. That's odd, and I am quite saddened if that is true. Unfortunately, since I am not trading in my phone currently, I cannot confirm if that is happening in my area as well. Sorry.

I had no idea I could trade in a phone on black tie protection towards a new phone.
However I suppose that keeps people from breaking their phones on purpose and getting a gift card or whatever they give. How does black tie work if you have to use it?

I traded in my old EVO 4g last year at BB when I upgraded for over $230.

I basically got an early upgrade for free

If you need to use their insurance, they just swap out phones

So what if there's no Evo Vs left on the shelf. How do they handle a damaged Evo V? Would I get a giftcard to use on anything? Or must it be another phone?

Wouldn't you be grandfathered by the plan you orginally bought? If every company can make policy changes even after the event you bought the policy that changes their contract with you that u orginally bought so id say thats either illegal or not right ethically, i can understand if ur paying for upgrade plan new as in now u cant do this but to change a polict after bought seems like theyd get a huge legal battle for them not upholding their orginal deal? Just guessing here cause i dont have a upgrade plan, thats why iam prepaid,

If worst comes to worst theres the pricematching still

Plus whatever u can get credit for ur phone

I'm sure there's some microscopic clause within the policy that states they have the right to make changes to it with no prior notice. Most policies are like that these days.

I gave my evo in today they didn't even ask what's wrong the clerk gave me my $320 back plus geek squad protection plan cost. That guy lied. I so happy and shocked considering my evo had been sitting in my drawer as garbage for a while now. I switched to a galaxy note 2 on tmobile awhile ago so it was like free money. :):):):D:D:D:D

if the policy didn't change I would recommend it to anyone. The process was pain free she didn't even check the phone maybe I just got a clerk who doesn't care because I thought I would have to explain. They wanted me to pick a phone of equal or lesser value but i opted for a store credit as im not on virgin anymore. Probably use the money on an ipod touch 5th gen.

Thats a awsome trade in value lol but knowing myself how bestbuy is could u take another photo not for me of course but others who have the plan so date & time is on it so that if a bestbuy rep gives these people issues they got a screenshot of it with complete info, its worse when u go to radio shack & hear some of the sales associate. BS People into buying crappy phones ive seen em do it & feel like saying something sometimes but not my place & ive seen bestbuy do the same so if they can make u accept u cant trade in your phone & pay full price for a new they will

Can you be a little me more specific on the process? Did you just go in to the store with your original receipt and say I want to swap this phone out using the protection plan or what?

What if I had my phone replaced via Virgin during the first year? Can I still take my current evo in? I guess I just don't understand how all this works. Should I have bricked my Optimus V (Easy to do - just do factory reset in the UI instead of recovery) to turn it in for credit on Virgin when bought my EVO?

I guess I just don't understand how all this works.

Yeah I had my original receipt and geek squad pamphlet, the service woman scanned it and scanned the box which I had. On my receipt it shows the ESN but I don't know if they used that to check the phone but they might. I attribute my success to the character of my servicer she seemed like she really didn't care but others might have success. It is the best buy on route 22 in union New Jersey by the way. I will upload receipts tomorrow so you guys can take a look.

No, because what you just described is known as fraud and further discussion will not be tolerated.

I see. Sorry. I apologize for the scenario I used. This still seems fishy to me though. I don't understand why Best Buy would allow customers to basically get the cost of their phone as a store credit by simply buying a replacement plan each time regardless of whether the phone is working. What was described is turning in a working phone under equipment replacement, not their buy back plan. That's were I am confused. How is that not fraud as well? The plan specifically states:

I'll drop the issue after this, but it seems to me this whole thread is encouraging something outside the scope of the plan. This is why I was confused. I thought maybe I had missed some benefit of this replacement coverage, which is why I was asking for clarifcation.

That's the thing the camera on the phone was broken. It could not focus and the pictures it took could not be opened in any photo app. I was just surprised that they didn't check what was wrong. Usually for plans like these they try to find every reason to turn you down. I did mention however that i had contacted geek quad prior and they told me to come into the store ( I actually did). My experience however may not occur for others depending on the store and clerk.
