Hi, I just received my HTC Desire(Orange Contract) literally 10 minutes ago, I was wonderwing what the best way is to get rid of all the pre installed Orange apps from my network provider, stuff like Orange app market and Orange Maps etc

Is there a reset to factory settings, and if so would this wipe all Orange stuff?

Thanks for any info

I did just this and the key is to make sure you follow the instructions very carefully, especially the ones about creating a gold card as it's the fiddliest bit. I used the 4Gb card the phone came with and once done I replaced it but will keep it in case I need to do it again.

The Orange stuff really pissed me off and the Desire is a much better phone for not having it installed. You will probably get an update shortly after you debrand the phone as well.

I just finished doing this following the steps, everything worked fine thankfully, so thanks for the link!

Now to decide whether to root it or not!

I would not root unless you are desperate to do the apps2sd thing. I installed appmonster instead as it can copy apps to the sd card as .apk files then you can re-install them as and when you need them.

What's the difference between rooting and debranding from orange? If something goes wrong with the phone after it has been debranded, can i still send my phone to orange? What exactly is the advantage of debranding? Lastly, how do i unlock my phone to get other simcards to work?

I only got this phone and have limited knowledge so someone can correct me on any errors, but I think debranding from Orange is basically flashing the phone with the generic firmware that is sold with all other HTC's whilst rooting is flashing it with a firmware which basically gives you alot more permissions to the phone .. more of a hack.

As far as advantages, the reason I wanted to debrand mine was because I didnt like all the orange software that they included like Orange maps, and Orange talk etc, I just wanted to use google stuff. Another big advantage is that when Froyo comes out I can now update to the HTC released one as soon as it is available, instead of having to wait for Orange to release their version.

I dont know how the warranty stands on this with Orange if it doesnt have their firmware.

Sorry twisted mind could you simplify this as i havent got a clue to what this meant! I'm an Android Noob!

For the OP, root and flash one of the custom modaco roms... your desire will then be ridden of the carrier bloat.

Also if you just debrand do you have to go through all these steps again (in the link above) or can you download the generic firmware updates automatically and install without doing this?
