Big List of Android Game Reviews [UPDATED DAILY]

Okay Nice will play and check
Awesome to hear that you found something you like :)

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Virexian
Virexian is a roguelike twin-stick space shooter that is free to try, allowing you to play through the first 12 levels before asking you to unlock the full game for $2.

The controls are smooth, the levels are randomly generated, there's a ton of different types of enemies, and over 50 weapons to randomly stumble into. The game is great overall, but DOES require you to pay to unlock the full version.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Bullet Force
Bullet Force is a FPS somewhat similar to CoD and Battlefield. As opposed to Critical Ops, which the other very popular multiplayer FPS on mobile, Bullet Force has more depth and is overall more developed.

The game is slightly pay2win, as you can buy the currency with which you unlock the weapons. So if you don't want to grind, you can pay, which will give you a slight advantage. Everything else runs smoothly, and the game has an offline mode vs. bots too.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Battle Bay
In this Angry Birds MOBA... oh, wait... there are no birds at all in this Rovio game? Strange, I could've sworn that was their thing... Oh well.

Battle Bay is a good attempt at a rather unique and different type of MOBA, but the execution is not perfect. The core objective of the game is to control a middle point on the map, but nobody ever goes for the objective, as you can also win by defeating all 5 enemy players, defeating the purpose of having the objective in the first place.

With some balancing and less heavy monetization, this COULD become a great game, but so far I'm only recommending it if you are curious about what Rovio are up to.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Poly Star!
Poly Star is a small casual, arcade-style space shooter where the HP of the enemies is defined by the amount of sides on their polygon spaceships.

Sounds strange, but works out really well. The game has no in-app purchases (although the dev said he/she might add a "pay to get rid of ads" if it's something the players want?). In terms of monetization, the game throws an occasional ad here and there, but it happens every so rarely.

The controls are nice, and the game keeps you glued to the screen, as you actually have to tap the screen to shoot (no auto-shooting here!). Overall, a neat little indie game.

Thanks man, haha. Yeah, it actually is rather tricky. A really neat indie game! :) Did you try the game yourself?

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Tiny Archers
Tiny Archers is a unique tower-defense'ish action game where you control a single archer trying to defend his tower from hordes of goblins and trolls. A rather unique experience, actually.

The control settings are nice, allowing you to customize the controls to your own liking, and in terms of monetization, the game has in-app purchases and incentivized ads, but you get plenty of gems (the premium currency) just by playing, so I never felt forced to buy anything.

Lovely art-style too, and plenty of levels to dive into. Enjoyed this one :)

I will download it on my tablet. Somehow I think it would be fairly impossible to play on a tiny phone.
Yeah, I mean, it depends on your screen-size. But certainly more space is better :)

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Faily Tumbler
Faily Tumbler is an endless runner that takes a lesson out of the Clash Royale book by adding "chest openings" (called Egg Hatches in Faily Tumbler" into the casual endless runner mix.

The controls and music is fine, but the funny fail(y) animations and ragdoll effects are what makes this game playworthy. The monetization does include occasional non-incentivized ads, but no un-skippable videos ads. So not perfect - but not horrible either.

Overall, a fun little casual endless runner that actually made me laugh while playing :)

@NimbleThor is their a game out like Atomic Cannon for PocketPC available on Android?.
Have you tried PocketTanks? The game is amazing :) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.blitwise.ptankshd&hl=en

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Art of Conquest
Playing Art of Conquest really threw me back to the good ol' Heroes of Might & Magic 3 days, which means I'm pretty much in love with this game.

Monetization is rather light (no ads), and the game is super polished in terms of art style and audio. Controls are neat as well, and the game world is interesting enough to keep me wanting to explore.

Overall, one of the most interesting games I've played this week!

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Sky Chasers
Sky Chasers is a retro-style adventure game where you fly around in a cardboard box (not as silly as it sounds). The art style and music is fantastic, and the gameplay is super difficult.

On the monetization-side, you can choose to watch ads (or pay in-game gold) to activate checkpoints throughout the five rather long game worlds. Alternatively, you can buy the full game for around $3-4 and all checkpoints will automatically be unlocked. A great and very unobtrusive monetization!

There's also a sleeve of cute/funny/interesting cardboxes to unlock, and overall this game is an easy recommendation from my end. It might not be your TYPE of game, but what it does, it does well :)

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Gladiator Heroes
Gladiator Heroes is a turn-based strategy game where the (rather difficult) gladiator battles mostly play out on their own (you have to activate skills, though) and the majority of the game is about micro-managing your gladiators, leveling them up, healing them after battles, acquiring new gladiators etc. instead.

There are no ads in the game (except a non-pushy incentivized video ad after winning a battle), and while you can buy gems through in-app purchases, the game is generous with rewarding you gems just for playing (chests with gems spawn randomly on the game map from time to time). A rather fair monetization compared to other mobile games.

The only downside to the game is that it will make you wait for... EVERYTHING! Wait for building to upgrade, gladiators to level up, heal, and much more! In the end, however, if you're looking for a game to play in quick 5-minute sessions at a time, this game is actually rather fun.

@OP, wow, I have some catching up to do with your reviews! Happy to see you pumped all these out. I just picked up a bluetooth controller that also supports the phone cradle/holder. I'll also be grabbing an Android TV soon. I need some recommendations other than the retro game I emulate
Well, you've come to the right place, mate ;) Be sure to let me know how your new setup works out, once you're all setup!

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: The Little Ball That Could
The Little Ball That Could (TLBTC) is a relaxing indie "roll the ball"-type of game with great audio and graphics aesthetics, and a ton of different control options, such as tilt (gyroscope), analog stick, and even a physical controller.

In terms of monetization, the game shows you a skippable video ad every once in a while, but you can buy the full game for just $3, which will make all ads go away, and unlock all check points. A nice and mostly unobtrusive way of monetizing - thumbs up! :)

With 120 hand-crafted levels, a bunch of different missions for each level, and plenty of skins to unlock, TLBTC is an easy recommendation if you're looking for a relaxing yet challenging casual game.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Adventure Quest 3D (AQ3D)
AQ3D is a truly cross-platform fantasy mmorpg (Steam, Android, iOS) and is probably the most unique fully-fledged 3D mmo on mobile right now, with parties, crafting and all that jazz.

The graphics aren't on par with, say, a Gameloft game, but at least the gameplay is neat, the story and humor in the game is fantastic, and it is not simply a cash-grab money machine that will throw in-app purchases and "special discount chests" at you all the time (sorry for my small rant there).

AQ3D isn't perfect, but the game is in open-beta and is definitely worth a try if you're looking for something fresh and different. Lastly, the game felt very natural to control, but it IS a full 3D game, so you'll need to run around with one finger, and rotate around your character with the other. In combat, it all works out just fine, though.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Super Rocket Pets
Super Rocket Pets is a neat little casual game that reminds me a lot of Jetpack Joyride. As opposed to Jetpack Joyride, however, Rocket Pets is split into worlds, with each world consisting of several parts.

The monetization is very fair: Pay $1 to remove all ads, or just live with the occasional skippable video ad.

Overall, a neat little casual game with several Happy Tree Friends-style characters and hats to unlock to keep us entertained.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: HIT Heroes of Incredible Tales
Heroes of Incredible Tales (HIT) is an action RPG that has a lot (both good and bad) going for it.

On the bright side, combat feels awesome, and you progress very quickly through the first areas of the game due to some overpowered weapons you're rewarded in the beginning. Combat also has quite some depth, and you can even customize each skill based on attack, crit rate and more (never seen this in any mobile game before?). Lastly, the game also has everything you'd expect from an RPG: quests, pvp, dungeons, instances, guilds, guild wars, weapon enhancing and much more!

On the... not-so-bright-side, the game WILL try to convince you to buy in-app purchases VERY often. Doesn't ruin the game - just a frustration. In addition, there's an auto-system that not only automatically attacks enemies, but also allows you to automatically replay (grind) the same level over and over without any interaction from the player. You can of course just choose not to use this feature, but it still tells me that the game will probably become VERY grindy at higher levels.

Overall, I'm sure quite a few of you will find this game good fun, as long as you decide not to spend any money.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Fancy Pants Adventures
Alright, so Fancy Pants Adventures finally arrived on mobile. Yes, that popular game with several hundred millions plays that you played in your browser back in the day! :)

Sitting at a 4.9 average rating right now on Google Play, the game has a fair monetization (pay $1 to remove ads), no energy system, no diamonds or chests - just a good old game, re-imagined for mobile. And yes, it also has controller support.

An easy recommendation from my end. The game is fun, and there's plenty of hours of gameplay value in the hand-drawn a challenging levels.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Tower Crush
Tower Crush is all about building a tower up to 6 floors in height with a different weapon on each floor, and subsequently upgrading each floor to infinity and beyond! Pretty straight forward and a quite unique gameplay experience.

The game has 250 levels, and a PVP mode is in the works as well. In terms of monetization, you will see a skippable video ad ever so rarely, but with any in-app purchase, the ads disappear forever.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Ire Blood Memory
RPG Ire: Blood Memory tries to do a lot, and gets some of it right. The UI and graphics aren't the most polished ever, but the style has an awesome dark and gritty feel to it. The combat has quite some depth (7 combos, special attacks etc.), and the developer cited both Dark Souls and Monster Hunter as inspirations for the game.

While the game has an auto system, don't let it scare you away from giving the game a try, as the monetization is less heavy than many other RPGs with auto systems (you e.g. get $38 worth of gems for logging in for 7 days).

Apart from this, IRE has all the rpg essentials (crafting etc.), and I'll the game for anyone looking for an rpg with a combat system with some depth. Note that 1) Ire: Blood Memory requires an internet connection to be played and 2) the tutorial is really long!

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Hello Yogurt
Hello Yogurt is an awesome casual game that might even teach you a thing or two about science (if you, like me, sucked at Science in school). As you take control of a lactobacillus on its way through the human digestive system (each part of the human body is 1 level), you upgrade and evolve the bacillus along the way until you've unlocked all 20+ bacillus evolutions (MUHAHAHA!!! - yes, that's my evil Scientist laugh... it's a work in progress ;)).

The monetization is well implemented with no forced ads, $50 maximum in-app purchase, and incentivized ads that will provide you with great rewards if you feel like it.

Overall, a close-to-perfect example of a casual mobile game that provides a fun gameplay experience without being ruined by the monetization.

Hey man, are you using a Bluetooth controller for any games?

I recently beat Neon Shadow (awesome game, written review in progress) with a wireless controller & loved the ability to use the precise dual sticks. I'm also about 90% done with the campaign in Dead Trigger using a controller. Yes... I'm only about 5 years behind on DT :thumbsupdroid:

Add: Here's the controller I'm using & mentioned in a previous post as well:

Hey, cool to hear from you. Where do you share your written reviews, by the way? Dead Trigger is neat, yeah!
I don't personally have a Bluetooth controller, no. It'd be neat to have one for sure :) Can you recommend the controller you're using? Or do you think there are better options out there?

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Cubie Adventure
Cubie Adventure is a very polished level-based casual one-touch arcade platformer. The game concept is rather unique, with your character running automatically, and the goal being to time tab the screen at JUST the right time, so that your character moves around the level without loosing momentum (while avoiding traps and enemies chasing you, of course).

There are three different game modes (one being PVP), lots of characters to unlock, and overall, I had a fun time playing this game, oftentimes literally sitting on the edge of my seat.

My only critique of the game is that while the level design is great, some levels are so tricky that you have to play the same level twice in order to finish it, which means you WILL run through the keys you needed to play each level (energy system) within 15-20 minutes, depending on how good you are. As a casual game, though, this most likely won't frustrate you much.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Lode Runner 1
Lode Runner 1 is a completely free (no ads and NO in-app purchases) retro platform remake of the original Lode Runner game from 1983. The game features 300+ levels in addition to the user generated levels created through the in-game level editor.

The art style is gorgeous and although the first levels were way too easy for my taste (you literally couldn't die), the difficulty starts picking up after level 20. The d-pad control scheme worked surprisingly well in this game, as you can choose to use it as a joystick too.

I'm honestly just surprised that this has been published by Nexon, a company that typically does very heavy p2w games. Good job! :)
