So just an hour ago my Droid eris was sitting on my desk. I moved over to grab a piece of paper and there goes my eris right offf my desk. Lands FACE 1st ( screen to the ground) go to pick it up screen is black with colored lines. NOT cracked. Pull the battery to hope it’s going to help. Nothing pull the battery 5 or 6 more times. I have insurance on the Droid eris. 89.99 OUCH. Now I have a co worker that is going to sell me his pretty much brand new Storm 2 for $100. I really hate my eris but loved the DROID System its self. Should I test the waters and see if I can talk myself into a different device or just go with the boring Backberry OS??? Or do I take the chance call Verizon tell me my tracking ball is messed up when I charge the phone (which it has for about 4 months now) and see what they can do?

If you have insurance, can't you just take it to the store and get a new one? If not, wtf are you paying for insurance for? I thought they told me it covers everything, even if you drop it. I declined anyway, but I'm pretty sure that was the deal...

Sounds like a personal decision me to me...

Do you want a storm 2? Sounds like no.

    You LIke Android? Yes?

    So Two options

    $90 for another Eris

Or More $$$ To buy a newer android out of pocket.

Spend the $90, root the Eris, over clock it to 710 and wait until your upgrade. OCd the thing runs like a charm.

That's probably why I ended up declining the insurance then... $90 to replace a phone that I only paid $50 for... IN ADDITION TO the extra $7 a month (I think that's what it was)...? Ha, no thanks.

    $7 x 24 months (2-year contract) = $168
Then add your $90 for the replacement = $258

You can buy a used Eris for less than that on craigslist/ebay and just take it to the store to get it activated, no change to your contract. And that's only IF you have to. If you never need it, then you wasted $168 on insurance.

That's the complete opposite of my auto insurance, where I pay $100 a month... They paid about $15,000 to fix my car after an accident. At my current rate, that would take 12 years to make up for.

    Phone insurance is a joke.

I see where you are coming from, but a HUGE amount of phone on CL/Ebay do not have clean ESN's (even if they claim they do)

Buy the Moto Droid. yea its alot bigger than the Eris and is considered Bulky but the thing runs so fast can be overclocked to 1.2ghz and you can find them for like $180. Prob cheaper since Droid X came out and the Droid 2 is coming out in august.

I would probably go one of the routes that these guys suggested, but I would definitely cancel the insurance. It is a complete waste of money if you aren't actually going to use it and replace the phone.

ya i am going to take off the insurance i had it last time with my blackberry and it was only $50 when i had to use it but my they up'd it to 89.99 for ( smart phones) I am just going to call Verizon and see what we can do bc I've had so many problems with this eris with the trackball and the dialing a number and not having it call the number for 2 3 4 minutes each time. But what do you guys think the chances of me calling CS telling them i have an issue with the tracking ball and them sending me another replacement and me sending this broken one back out to verizon?

Its only 50$ if it is your fault with insurance..

If it has water damage or broken or anything like that it's 50$. Any other problem and it's free. I dropped mine in water and just handed it to verizon saying.. It wont turn on.. and they gave me one for free. So, try that

Here's the issue. The $50 you actually paid for the Eris isn't the true value of the Eris. The device itself, at least when it first came out, was $499 off contract. That's the actual hardware cost. The only reason you got it for $50 is because Verizon was willing to eat the difference in order to get you to sign their 2 year agreement. When a 2 year contract costs roughly $2,100, they don't mind losing a few hundred to get you to sign it.

The $90 for the new Eris IS quite reasonable, when you take into account the other option is to normally buy a new phone off contract, which in the case of the Eris is still $400+ in most places (like Amazon and Best Buy).

Chances are, they will try to send you to a local company store (not a kiosk in the mall or other "authorized retailer) to get them to look at the problem. You may get someone who is willing to send you a new one first, but they may choose to charge you later upon inspection of the unit you sent in.

The insurance option isn't a bad deal, all things considered. I know a lot of people that only keep the insurance for the first year or so. After that the cost-to-benefit ratio starts to dwindle and it becomes cheaper to just save that money towards the cost of a new phone.

I think what they are saying is that your LCD panel is actually cracked. The screen on most capacitive phones are made up of several layers. One of those is the LCD layer. The part that most people think of as cracking is the glass top layer. It's entirely possible to break the glass layer, but keep the LCD intact (which is a cheap fix). In your case, your glass didn't crack, but the LCD layer underneath it appears to have cracked, thus distorting your image.

The $90 is the deductible. Just like any other insurance plan, you pay a certain amount per month, and you cover the first little bit of the cost to replace/fix it.

I agree. Before sending my refurb they were pretty clear in telling me I would be charged ($470 I think) if the phone I returned to Verizon had any damage. The CSR specifically asked if the screen was cracked or if the phone had any water damage.

This is very true. The $90 deductible + x amount of months can be a LOT cheaper than shelling out for a new (read:new) device, which can retail for $450. Of course, if they just sent you a refurb or a pre-owned device, it probably might not be worth it.

It also saves you the headache of getting a phone with a bad ESN.
