That would be great, all my friends with bbs keep telling me get bb, but i love my android, and the only thing that i like about bb is bbm. I just wonder how will it work in the UAE, especially that we didn't get a proper market place yet and can't get payed apps >.<

Same here all my friends also try to persuade me to get a bb but they honestly are hopeless things. when it is released you may be able to download it on the internet rather then the market.

Amongst all the pining for BBM that I've heard, the only thing I've heard that it offers over SMS is group chat, and the avoidance of SMS charges (if any, at the expense of data charges, if any). Any (multi-platform) messaging app can have the same effect on SMS charges; so as far as I can tell, the real appeal of BBM is a huge existing user base. Is that it, or am I missing something?

Yes, but from what I've read of BBM:

-Messages are sent/received much quicker than SMS.
-You get new message notifications on BBM (crackberry light).
-Allows you to see if someone has read your message and if they are responding in real time.
-Allows you to attach pictures and videos.
-Works internationally without having to pay obscene data charges.

The multi-platform apps are getting better but I don't think any of them do all of that as well as BBM.

It's not out for Blackberry yet. The problem with all of these multi-platforms apps though is you have to convince your friends/family to download and use them which isn't as easy as you think.

Are there any IM/text apps which don't require my friends
to download and still will work?

    Anyone tried LiveProfile?

it's a lot easier to convince them if you tell them "I'm not going to talk to you at all because I don't have phone X."
btw they say blackberry should be out really soon. They just need the servers to handle the downloads

Thanks. While those features don't do anything for me, I can now better understand its appeal to others. When I worked in a large company, I used delivery and read receipts 100% of the time in email, and I would probably have wanted the same features in a messaging app too (if we had smart phones back then).

With BBM being a single-platform app, you have to convince them (or vice-versa) to get a Blackberry - probably even more difficult.

In a business environment I can see its usefulness since its use can be mandated, but for personal use I don't see that the benefits outweigh the hassle of getting everyone in your "circle" using the same app.

But then again, I'm apparently an old fogie - when I want to talk with someone I actually call them. I reserve sms-like services for times when I want to pass along some info without actually starting/having a conversation or getting a response.
