I've heard recently that Sprint plans to allow an option for removing the bloat-ware on their future phones. I believe this is going to start with the Evo 3D?
Just curious if anyone has heard whether the Photon will get that option as well. (I am soooo loving Sprint for that!)

Pretty sure it will, at least from all the articles I've read.

The early reports from the EVO 3D owners are that not all the bloatware can be removed, just some of the Sprint connected bloatware.

All I know is, NASCAR is going to be taken off the phone first without a doubt!

I don't know what I'll remove first....NASCAR, NFL Live or Facebook! (NOT a FB user!) :p

I dunno if facebook is removable. You can check with the evo 3d folks, to see what can be removed.

The thing is, since you don't use Facebook, all you have to do is just indicate that the app should never be updated. That way, the amount of space it takes up will stay the same, even if there are updates for the app.

To this day, I still haven't rooted, so I can't really comment on whether a locked bootloader can be rooted or not (just to remove bloatware), but hopefully Motorola will unlock the bootloader just like they did or are going to do for the Atrix.

Yeah, only other way would be to root the phone, but still remains to be seen if that's going to be easy or difficult. The guys at XDA always seem to pull something out in order for people to be able to root.

Talking bout it with my family makes, 1 family member jealous because it might be out b4 the bionic and he's on verizon, another family family member jealous cuz he wants an android world phone (although, he wants one with physical qwerty like his shift), and another family member jealous because his epic has been bugging out, and still another jealous cuz he's stuck on a cliq...lol

AFAIK a locked bootloader is not rootable. It prevents a person like you or me from getting to the boot screen without proper computer connections and software.

Not sure the difference between locked and signed bootloader, but Motorola usually has their bootloaders signed if I am not mistaken. This does not prevent rooting the phone, it just prevents loading up custom ROMS not based on their kernel.

We have to remember though that he had a test phone and that had an unlocked bootloader so it could be different than the final release.

It had an unlocked bootloader? I don't remember shawheim confirming that.

The ability to remove bloatware was announced on the EVO 3D and that for future Sprint android phones, they would afford people the ability to remove certain bloatware.

This is the post I was thinking of and it wont let me quote the post since the thread is locked.
"The signal bars are clear I can promise you that. They are a like teal color, not the normal colors you usually see. Plus the notification bar is a blue color also. When 3G goes away they turn like white or gray.

Also on another thread people were along me if the bootloader was unlocked since this is a dev unit. When I activated the phone out came up on sprint as developer unit. The phone has terminal emulator installed from motorola but I don't know the commands to check the lock status."

I was mistaken about that it was unlocked and he actually didnt know if it was locked or not. I still think we should be a bit cautious about what we think is removable and not on the phone since it was a developer unit and we dont know how much freedom he had over it compared to a model we will get.

I posted on xda and asked if anyone could tell me how to do a rom dump. That way the devs can have some fun with it.

No, I agree about throwing a little caution to the wind because shawheim had a test model, but my main point was that the removal of bloatware was something that Sprint decided to make available to to android customers on a going forward basis.

Does anyone know how I can remove all of the Sprint bloatware from my Photon without losing the voicmail and diagnostic app? I would also like to know how I can remove the sounds from my camera and camcorder app. Thank you.

Rooting is the only way to remove ALL of the Sprint bloatware. There are certain pre-installed Sprint apps that you can remove, without rooting, but it's only limited to a few.
