Root [Boost Mobile] In a bind with my flashed rooted S3

Hi,
This is my first post and I hope I'm posting in the right spot. I have a Sprint S3 that is rooted and flashed to Boost. The person I got the phone from helped me as updates came along and everything was good. Well now he isn't doing it anymore and I'm stuck with a phone that needs an update and I don't know what to do. I'm a bit miffed he left me in the lurch but I guess it was going to happen sooner or later and I wasn't prepared at all. He would send me the files in email and then walk me through the update over the phone. Now that I am on my own I wouldn't even know where to start to look for these updates online or what update is even needed for my phone. I don't think I have Jelly Bean but other than that not even sure what info to share so that someone can hopefully help me. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Wish I could help um with the jelly bean I'm pretty sure you have it maybe not 4.2.2 but you have 4.1.2 and as far as the updates maybe you could search the Web for the answers I can't really help with that sorry all I can say is next time just wait until boost comes out with the phone because you see new we can't help you that much if you don't have the same device um maybe you can pm one of the other guys with the sprint phone flashed to boost and see if he can help

Thanks for your response. I wish I would have known that Boost would eventually be getting better phones because I would definitely have waited. Pretty sure I do not have jelly bean but I will check again. Don't know what you mean by pm another user and have no idea of where to look or what to even look for online In hindsight it probably was not ideal to go this route if I didn't know how to do the updating by myself. Just hope I can find someone to help soon

U sure you have a gs3 because.... When gs3 was released it came with jellybean

What updates are you needing? Firmware updates? Updates to the rom? Are you running a custom rom? 4.0.4 is ice cream sandwich.

Can you take a screenshot of your "about phone menu" for us? Just to be sure what we got going on

Thanks for the responses. I believe it is a custom rom but can't say definitively. After I got the phone whenever I would get a message on the phone that an update was available, the guy that helped me with the phone would send me files to update the phone. He told me not to install the update that popped up on the phone but if I tried it probably wouldn't work anyway. I can take a screenshot but I'm wondering how do I include it in the post? I can just type out the info - do you need all the info from the about the phone screen or only certain things?

Yes I think your on a certain rom and you can upload it to any photo sharing site and hit the image button on the thread once you start typing and put the link to the image there

I figured installing ROM Manager would be a good idea going forward? Is that a good app? Trying to follow along with all the info included in the app - I did watch a you tube video that explained it but still a little unclear on all the different features. One question - once I downloaded the app it said it must update ClockworkMod first which I guess means that is what was used on my phone previously. (that is the screen that comes up with purple text when you are wiping, etc?) I think it is a simple update like any other app would be updated but just wanted to ask because I wasn't sure if it would perform some other kind of update that would wipe my phone or make it unusable.

i personally dont use rom manager. this app has given birth to some horror stories.most experienced flasher wont touch. if you want to update cwm download the tar and odin or mobile odin will do the rest. much safer

Thanks for the suggestion. And when using these apps to update cwm, is it just like updating an app or do you go into recovery while doing it? Cwm is not a seperate app but part of an app right? Sorry if these are silly questions but this is all new to me. I need to learn how to do these things until I get a different phone which probably won't be for awhile. What exactly is ODIN? I have heard the term before but it wasn't explained to me.

Hi,
Just wanted to update the post - I successfully installed custom rom over the weekend. Thought I lost root but after a reboot it was fine. Most importantly didn't lose boost and 3g & MMS are still working! Thanks everyone for your help!!!
