Root [Boost Mobile] Is it possible to wifi tether with stock 4.4.2 rooted?

I have yet to decide on a ROM for this phone yet. I am running stock ROM which is rooted with CWM Recovery. I understand a little regarding the "KNOX" implementation of security that seems to block hotspot tethering. I thought my SUPERUSER got rid of it but I still seem to have it. My question is, IF KNOX IS THE PROBLEM, is there a a way to get rid of it? (I have heard about manually deleting KNOX files but not sure if that is completely safe). I have not been able to get any WIFI Tethering APP to work. I have tried pretty much all them. Am I just going to be forced to install a custom ROM at this point? Thanks in advance for your comments.

    Knox does not stop tethering.

There is a hotspot fix that has been discussed quite a bit on this forum. Sorry don't have a link. But you should be able to search for it.

I am running the Conquest ROM. It is a stock based rom with a AOSP feel to it. And yes, it has native hotspot and a lot of other goodies.

Excellent job recommending Conquest! It's a great ROM.

I tried the ND8HotspotMod and it simply didn't work. I am not new here and searched and read up on all available posts before I even thought about posting here. So, that fix that I flashed didn't resolve the problem. It is showing the "wifi signal" but it will not produce an internet connection.

I Odin-ed ND8 when it first became available. ND8 has the native Sprint HotSpot and it worked out of the box for me (NDC did/does not have the hotspot). I also read that several other people also had ND8 working without having to make any fixes.

Sorry that you're having difficulties with the "fixes" that you have tried.

Maybe someone else will chime in with a solution to your problem.

I am stock 442 rooted and also had trouble getting the hotspot working. I finally paid a few bucks for WiFi Teather Router by Fabio Grasso from the Play Store. If you go to his website and set it up for our carrier per his instructions it works just fine. I don't use it a lot but it has worked for me for a couple of months now.

Not that I do not mind paying a few bucks for a wifi tether app, why wouldn't free ones work, such as barnacle, etc.? I am hoping someone will look into developing a permanent fix for this regarding the 4.4.2 update.

I use to use barnacle but it won't work for us any more. I'm so cheap I believe I tried every free app out there. I may have missed one. I believe what those that are more knowledgeable than I are telling you is to flash the nd8 modem then apply the fix, if necessary. The boost ndc modem does not have the capability for native wifi tethering but the sprint nd8 does. Someone else correct me if I have any of this wrong.

It's not the modem, it's the ROM that doesn't have tethering. I've been running the NDC modem and have no problems with tethering.

Forget ROMS for the moment. Is there anyone that would look into a fix for stock rom 4.4.2 ROOTED? That is the point of my post and the entire question here.

You should probably email the developers of the apps you're trying to use to see if there is a fix or one in the works. The posts above have clearly stated how everyone here is tethering with 4.4.2 on this phone. Either you buy wifi-tether, or you flash a rom that supports it like one based on ND8 or AOSP. That is the only "fix" we have right now. Sorry.

That's just it. Boost rooted stock 4.4.2 does not have built-in tethering. If you want tether working in the stock Boost ROM you'll have to add an app. Probably a paid app. WiFi tether router by Fabio Grasso is an excellent I bought it awhile back when CyanogenMod was having trouble with their hotspot. According to a member's post, there are instructions on the developers website telling you how to get it working for Boost.

Your other options are simple. Flash the Sprint rooted stock 4.4.2 which has tether built-in or flash a custom ROM which has tether built-in.

Here is the fix to get tether working on the Sprint rooted stock. This does away with the hotspot asking for activation.

Stumbled across this post. I have the Boost Volt (stock KitKat 4.4.2) and am using WiFi Tether Router 6.0 on default settings (just set SSID and password) with no issues. The current version is 6.0.4... Maybe there's something different?

Wetbiker, please understand that earlier in my post I spoke specifically about that "fix" and stated IT DID NOT WORK FOR ME. Now, you have added that one needs to "flash a Sprint rooted stock." I had no idea about that. Regardless, I am not interested in FLASHING a ROM stock or otherwise, if at the end of the day a simple app will work.

THE ONLY way to tether on boost stock ROM is the app WiFi tether router. About 3 bucks. Worth every penny.

    I'm just giving you options.

As it stands right now, the only app that will enable a hotspot for the stock Boost ROM is the Wifi Tether Router app by Fabio Grasso (which has been mentioned multiple times). At least it's the only app our S3 members are reporting which works.

That FIX link I posted is specifically FOR the Sprint ROM. How can you have a fix for the Boost ROM which DOESN'T have a hotspot to begin with?? A ROM has to have it 1st before a FIX can work.

The answer to my post is simply the Wifi Tether Router by Fabio. I have it and its working. Thank you to those that answered. :)

Thanks a million. I have been arguing about the problem with the boost phone with BF for a couple days. So I am clear, in order to actually get a hotspot capability I will need to flash a new rom (conquest) that has tethering capabilities. My only thing is i dont know if the phone is NDC or ND8. It is a samsung s3 sph-l710t (tri-band) by boost mobile with kit-kat 4.4.2. I have already installed phillz touch recovery and rooted the phone, and I want to make sure if I install the new rom it won't overwrite my recovery. So if anyone knows if the phone is ndc or nd8 plz let me know and will conquest overwrite what I have already installed?

    Thanks in advance.

Your phone is neither NDC or ND8 because it is a tri band. Sorry but from the sound of it that ROM won't work on your phone. It's for the sph-l710 while your phone is a sph-l710T. Your phone is a different model and to my knowledge there aren't any touchwiz custom roms for that model. Your best off buying the tether app posted above.

Just get the app WiFi tether router from the play store. Like previous post said, conquest isn't designed for your phone.

We're seeing more and more people posting who have the tri-band phone. The Forum may have to start them their own section.

Is that from boost? You're right another section for it would be helpful. I wonder how different it innards really are

I'm not sure but there are definitely quite a few differences.

The reason I think it needs its own section or at least a branch off this one is because it uses a different modem. The last thing we need is for people to start getting the non T info confused with the T version's. All it'll take is one time flashing the wrong modem and that's a wrap. Instant brick! Trust me. It's only a matter of time before someone does it.

lol, trust me the last thing I want to do is brick the phone. What is the difference betrween ndc and nd8 anyways? is it the same as d2lte? Im trying to get a feel for what I'm looking for and if by chance I find a way to get around this tether problem with out having to pay for it trust me you all will be the first to know. I make it a personal mission in life to make the impossible, possible.

    :p
