Root [Boost Mobile] [OUTDATED][GUIDE][MD7][MG2] Rooting & Recovery for Galaxy S3(Boost)

Got Milk?
Yep

Got Root?
Yeeeeaaahhh!

Thanks to everybody in this thread. Especially WETBIKER! He has hounded, prodded and almost grabbed me by the throat cross country in order to persuade me to Just Do It!

I did have a little trouble getting the recovery to take. I actually got CWM to Odin successfully first. I did a CWM backup of my Rooted System first. I did not run the Root Zip though. I rebooted the phone to make sure that it still worked. LOL. (It did). When I went back to recovery, it was back to the system recovery.

Odin always said successful but I could not get CWM back. So, I flashed TWRP and did a backup with that. LOL.

Flashed the Zip without rebooting first this time. I thought that it did not work because it said something about FAIL. But then a box came up from within TWRP that said something like "Do you want to Root?". Of course!

Phone rebooted, system updated. SuperSu installed. Notification said that it was not rooted yet and needed to update. It did.

Rooted!!!

Downloaded Titanium Backup Pro and am backing up my stuff now. As you can tell, I do believe in Backups.

Next step. Get rid of some of that annoying stuff I do not want. This is not lke the Prevail, where I had to remove bloat to get some space. Got plenty of that. But all those apps that I will never use get on my nerves.

Thanks to everyone again.

Now Wy..... you know I didn't pressure you that much hahahahahaha..... well, maybe I did pressure you just LITTLE BIT! GET-R-DONE! :D Aren't ya happy now? lol :p

LOL!!!! I read where people were having issues with CWM. That's the reason I went with TWRP my 1st try. 1st try with TWRP = PROFIT! :D

If you skip CWM and follow the steps I posted, YOU WILL ACHIEVE RECOVERY AND ROOT THE 1ST TRY. It worked for me flawlessly. ;)

Oh, and for those of you who don't know..... when making a backup with TWRP, look down close to the bottom and you will see a box letting you know where the backup will be stored. Tap it and it will give you the options "Internal Storage, Micro SDcard, or USB-OTG. Choose where you want it to store your backups. I chose to store mine on the SD. :D

To all who have shared their knowledge and time to help make this section better, THANK YOU. :)

TWRP is the way to go. I am more familiar with CWM but TWRP has much more capability.

Also, The Cuban Updater that comes with the Wicked Sensations ROM seamlessly integrated with it for applying mods.

I had tried to install TWRP first but I think I was not doing the buttons properly.Lol.

So, I tried CWM and it worked but did not stick. Went back to TWRP and it worked and stuck. In hindsight, it worked out OK, and I learned something. And it was fun.

But, you are right, TWRP is the way to go.

Okay i just got this phone yesterday 10/07. just read both these pages, so TWRP is the way to go? I had that problem with the "cant mount" issue on 4.2.2 roms on my galaxy s2. was really hoping to be done with that lol.

Use these steps I've modified and replace them in the original guide. You'll end up with a fully functional version of TWRP.

Thanks for the response guys. so 4.2.2 roms and i imagine 4.3 have issues with 4g correct. do we still have to do a mms fix like with the s2? ##3282#, enter msl and change the mmsc proxy, etc? i guess i want to know are the roms fully functional weather TW or AOSP/AOKP? im seeing different things. Some say they had sucess, others say not. im mostly interested in AOSP. i was running slim bean on my gs2 and thought when i got the s3 and got off wimax i would be able to run 4.3 or something.

I'm good bro. Thanks Smith058, I got it figured out.

Austrie, I hope you don't mind me borrowing a few of your steps and modifying them so that this will work for the newer phones and let them flash TWRP with Odin. This way they don't even have to worry about bothering with the RECOVERY FIX.

For those of you who have the new Boost phones and want a for sure way to flash TWRP with Odin, then root, please replace these steps in the list above posted by Austrie.

1. Download TWRP Recovery, Samsung Drivers, Odin 3.04, and Root From Recovery Zip

TWRP image can be found here. Scroll down and look for the ODIN PACKAGES!! Select the TWRP download. ( It is tested and working... I'm running it now :D )

New recoveries for new phones that won't mount storage!! - xda-developers

6. Place Odin Folder and TWRP File In A Folder On Your Desktop

10. Navigate To The TWRP recovery file ( recovery.tar.md5 ) And Double Click It.

21. It Should Take 10 Seconds, Once Odin Says 'PASS’ ( up in the top left hand corner of the window ), You May Unplug Your Device. Don't look for it to say PASS in the scrolling window because that's not where it says it. LOL :p

Thanks go out to all who are contributing to the development of this phone. You guys are appreciated.

Kennyglass123 also has a Modified CWM Recovery image but I have not tested it. I have the Modified TWRP Recovery on my phone and it is working perfectly. ;)

Thanks for this. :)

Question though. On my S3, I already had to get the MSL for my phone on account of some steps for troubleshooting a voicemail issue I'd been having every time I had to swap handsets. Problem is that when I enter the ##72786#, I get this "SCRTN" or some similar show up and before I know it, the whole phone restarts. At no point do I get to enter the MSL at all.

Is that something that needs to be fixed? If so, how?

It was some troubleshooting that boost was requiring me to do as part of the steps.

Simply, I got a notification for 3 voicemails, but when I either press to dial for my voicemails or load up that voicemail app, it insists there are no such messages, and it won't go away no matter what. So one thing they had me try to do was to reset the phone to enter the MSL code. but when I enter that 727 thing, it restarts before I ever see anywhere to enter the MSL.

Ya... You're going to be stuck with the voicemails...
I have same problem... Forever stuck with 2 voice mails from like 4 phones back. ... I read somewhere that the only way is to activate a non smart phone, delete vm's and then re activate you new phone....

As for that code you're putting in it does reset service and does not need msl

Okay guys, small problem.

Had to return the first SGS3 I got because it was having some pretty effed up problems, got a swap for a fresh S 3.

In the process the last OTA update was applied, so I don't know if that is the problem here. However, I didn't see an inherent problem in small part because I was able to follow the steps to install the CWM recovery from Odin no problem.

However, when it comes to actually install the "root from recovery" part, recovery mode gives me a "signature not verified" error, and the phone reboots. And looking through the apps, superuser is still not installed, regardless of my attempts to do so.

What now?

Re download and try again...
Tried that. It still refuses to install it.

**EDIT/UPDATE**

Okay, I think I figured out the solution.

On a lark I decided to check the link and use the alternate/mod Odin-able recovery mode, which at least allowed me to disable Sig-checking for installing the root-from-recovery zip.

This worked successfully, and now I am once again rooted. :)

I always use Odin if available instead of adb or fastboot. Much easier imo.

Nice that they have both CWM & TWRP tars. :D

I did use Odin as well. Problem is the CWM recovery in the OP - while it flashed no problem - was refusing to allow me to install the root-from-recovery zip. So I had to use something else.

Yup. Made some changes to the original tutorial my post. Its post #50. I Made a small tutorial telling users how to use the Odin tar.

Been using ever since and the only issue I have is the time will not set to my time zone. LOL I can live with that. :D
