Sounds like you've lost root. Try updating su in the market.

Also, if you want an automated way of killing the sound, the Boot Animation Changer in the market has a tool to do just that. Still needs root though, so you need to fix that first.

Try downloading ES File explorer. brotherswing knows how to set it up for root file exploring.
Without your /system being set to write only, even if your rooted, you won't be able to change anything.

Oh, that one is easy! After you get ES File Explorer installed, launch it. From it's main screen hit the menu button, and select settings. Scroll all the way down, and check the last two boxes. You will get the pop up from su, select "allow". Now from the main screen of ES, click the star button, then the phone icon. You now have access to the entire file system of your phone /w read-write access.

There are other file managers out there that you don't need to set up this way, but I like ES because if you swipe left on the main screen, you're now browsing your network. I haven't seen any of the others do that!

It also allows the rooted user to change permissions on file folders as well.

Yes, it does a great number of things most pc users take for granted.

Alrighty I downloaded es file manager and set the root permissions. put the sound in /system/media rebooted and no sound. I did download the bootsound.zip from the BACKside IHO thread and installed it before I did any of this. do I have to name the file a certain way? the file I put in is droid_12.mp3

that's cool, :D I have yet to explore its posibilities. my favorite app so far is opera mini cause Im always on the internet. oh and one question. my network data is kinda slow for downlods. usually around 150-200kbs could I increase that at all, or is it not possible

Not much can be done about that if it's network load. Do you know what your average speed was before?

For anyone else reading this thread, the issue with changing the bootsound was that slayer forgot to rename the new sound file to android_audio.mp3 ;)

For network download speeds, it depends on the towers near you. Virgin Mobile only leases a subset of Sprint's towers. You may get better performance by doing a PRL swap, but there is no guarantee. It did give me better cell reception at home (I live in a deadzone for VM), but not better download speeds. However, my download speeds at work are very fast, thanks to a tower being visible through my window. ;)

I'm on wifi 90% of the time, and the other 10% I'm happy to have half way decent speeds anyway.
