Sounds as if the Xoom really will be the Nexus One of Tablets. :)

    This is extremely good news.

On a side but related note - if we root the Xoom, how hard will it be later to upgrade to Ice Cream or get other OTA updates? I only recently rooted my DINC so have not yet had to go through an OTA, but I seem to recall that there may be issues getting updates once rooted.

    Just curious...

Well, what I meant was, we've already talked about leaked pricing models of the wifi and the official 3g pricing. Just hearing that there's a 3rd option is good news.

The wifi model pricing was not confirmed.

once rooted you can just install a rom with the new software, usually way before OTA. (my droid1 has gingerbread)

Normally custom ROMS block OTA updates to prevent the unrooting of devices. Updates come way faster to rooted devices. We get the optimized official updates plus we get the optimized non official updates. Non official meaning the leaks of the OTA updates.

But your at the mercy of the ROM developer to get that into the ROM your using, thus possibly waiting longer.

IMO, ROM developers are much more reliable than the manufacturer when releasing updates. This is speaking of my experience with the Droid.

Completely agree. But some people want it yesterday. And want the actual OTA.

Well those people should be lashed 50 times and banished to the seventh level of hell :D

I myself will be waiting to unlock my bootloader. This isn't a phone and I don't want to screw it up...plus running stock for awhile is the way to go to introduce yourself to a device.

FWIW I too have been running gingerbread for weeks with Cyanogenmod on my Nexus. :) That OTA that is now pushing would be a DOWNgrade. :)

I think the people who ask custom rom devs for eta's and complain about not getting updates deserve 100 lashes. :D. Because there are some pretty impatient people over at the custom rom threads which to me are worse than the ones who complain about manufacturers taking forever with official updates.
Most custom rom devs are pretty good at updating roms when people find issues with their work, you can't say the same thing about manfacturers. :(
That's why I give so much importance to dev support when buying an Android device including the Xoom. With them announcing that the bootloader is unlocked, it raised its value in my eyes.

The only thing I'm worried about with rooting my Xoom is the 4G "Upgrade" It's supposed to be a Software 'and' hardware upgrade for 4G support right? I'd just hate to void the ability to receive the upgrade when it comes. For that reason I may hold off on tinkering until down the road.

So, looks like they made it real easy like someone else did recently, probably HTC.
