I bought a used Samsung galaxy s3 but didn't know anything about the unlock or carrier issues until now I was told that I would be able to use a sim card for straight talk but not I don't know what I m doing as this is my first android phone so I don't know anything about rooting, is there any way I will be able to use this phone or did I just waste my money

Find out which carrier it's locked to, AT&T or TMobile. Get a Straight Talk SIM card for that carrier. (Look on the Shop/SIM Cards page and choose the right one).

If it's a Verizon phone, you probably can also get it on Straight Talk. Go to Straight Talk Compatibility Tracfone: BYOP to find out. If it's a Sprint phone, I don't think you can use it on ST (yet - that might change in the future).
