Ok, so I wanted to root and install cm7 on my gs2. I rooted with no problem and installed Clockwork Recovery with ROM Manager. ROM Manager wouldn't download cm7 so I manually downloaded it and put it in the root of my sdcard. I made sure to check that it was for SGH-I777. I renamed it update.zip and went to install it through recovery, but it told me assert failed. I tried to reboot but it just showed an empty battery with a circle in the middle. I waited a few minutes and when nothing happened, I rebooted into download moad and reflashed the root kernel. On reboot, it showed the Galaxy S II text but just hung there. I used adb to reboot into recovery and tried to apply update.zip. Same error. Since I had backed up my apps with Titanium, I decided to just do the factory wipe and try again. Same error. So basically, I have a phone that only has a recovery mage and no OS, and it refuses to install cm7. Is there any hope for my situation?

Thanks! I got my phone into a working state now! Now I just need to try installing Cyanogenmod and hope that works, but at least if it doesn't, I know how to fix it.

Don't forget to always do a NANDROID backup each time you do this in Clockworkmod.

DON'T rename the ROM file to update.zip. This is what bricked your phone. Use "apply zip from sd card" from within recovery and choose the cm7 rom to install.

Actually, I suppose I meant "install zip from sdcard" and then "choose zip from sdcard" and then select the rom you want to install. I suppose...

Moving this to the all things root section now that you have been helped out. Glad to see that you got this fixed.
