EVO 4g, fully rooted, I sold it and tried to do a factory reset to erase all my data.
now when it powers up it says "android" then comes up a carbon fiber looking blank screen.
    That's it.
To make matters worse, I recently changed the glass screen and they messed up my volume buttons so I can't get into the factory boot.
    Can someone please help ?

Bring it back to "them" and tell them to fix what they broke. If they argue, ask for their attorney's phone number, so that your attorney can work out the new phone they'll be buying you with their attorney. (Unless "they" is listed on a major stock market, that alone is usually enough to get them to become reasonable. If not, a quick visit to an attorney can result in an attorney's letter to "them", making it even more clear that you're not going to just forget about it. [The first consultation with the attorney is usually free.])

My motto has always been, "you break it, you own it".

Moved ya to the root forum here:)

So, you personally replaced the glass and consequently, the volum up/down buttons do not function? Or someone else did the glass replacement and they boogered the job as far as the volume buttons?

Then you did the factory reset?

Nevertheless, I'm just wondering if some adb commands will work here?
I understand it won't fully boot, but just curious if using adb can boot it into bootloader or recovery to flash a rom...But without the volume buttons functioning, I'm not sure how far we can go :hmmmm:

But as far as Rukbat said, if someone else fudged the glass replacement job thereby rendering the volume buttons inoperative, can you take it back to them?

adb should work here.......do you have a custom recovery? if so which one? what is your hboot? how did you root the phone? how did you do the factory reset? there are a few ways to do it.

but like it has been said if by "they" who messed up the phone then "they" should fix it.

I had Dr. Phone Fix do it for $60.00, and had to take it back to them SIX times just to get the phone to work halfway decent.
Then I messed up and bricked it...
I rooted the phone myself, Mikestony helped me out BIG time with it ( I was werking on it for almost a week).
The custome recovery I think is the one with the Road Runner on it.
I have the file on my laptop MIKROM ??

I'm almost afraid to take it back to Dr. Phone Fix for fear they will screw it up worse.
$60.00 is a lot of money though.
Is there any other way to do it ?

    PS what is ADB ?

  8. Rukbat

ADB is Android Debug Bridge, a program you use to do things to your phone that the manufacturer never intended for you to do (like run it as the real Linux computer it is).

As far as Dr. Phone Fix is concerned (than you for letting me know who NOT to call for help), if it's still not working, I'd take it back, speak to the owner and ask if he's going to do the job correctly THIS time or AFTER your attorney gets involved (and charges him for both the attorney's time and your 5 unnecessary trips). And I'd tell him that if he doesn't know how to fix a phone correctly, he can save himself a lot of cost and wasted time by going down the block to <whomever> and buying me a new one.

I've been in the business of repairing cellphones. If one of my people had messed up a phone THREE times, I would have replaced it before I fired him, but he would have been fired that day. (And paid for the replacement.) And no one would have had to ask me to replace the phone, I would have asked them to forgive me for having to replace it. (The only one I refused to replace was the one the customer's 5 year old son dropped into the toilet. And she got angry about that.) You break discards that you're learning on, not customers' phones.

ADB is....and I'll try to explain it the best I can....is a program which you can use to access your device from the command windows on the computer. Using simple commands, you can push and pull files to and from the phone, reboot into recovery or bootloader among other things. :)

I am not all that familiar with ADB, or the commands issued.
I know you cannot boot up the phone, but there is a setting in the phone called, "usb debugging" that needs to be enabled for ADB to work....so that's another thing that leads me to believe adb may or may not work.
The other problem is your volume buttons not functioning.

Here is a good write up on setting up and using ADB:
    http://androidforums.com/faqs/443072-adb-guide-updated-2013-05-21-a.html

As far as your statement on the custom recovery with the roadrunner......that is the rom you are thinking of;)
    Mik rom...

I need to think about this some more.....boy, without your volume buttons working, and the fact that the "usb debugging" option not enabled.... :hmmmm:

I wonder if a ruu might work in this situation?

What is your hboot and baseband? This can be located in the bootloader if you can get to it.

I have no Idea what either one of those things are.

But since my phone is basically useless as is, I may as well give it a shot and see if Dr. Phone Fix will fix the buttons.

Is this your daily phone? I mean, all this stuff you've been thru, you've been without it for a while.
I know you stated in your op that you sold it, but I wasn't quite clear on that

Thanks for your input, I'm gonna call Dr. Phone Fix on Monday and see what they say.
If not, I'll probably spend the money to have "U break I fix" fix it, they fixed my glass before, but they charged $100.00 and they are a lot farther away.

But you sound like I may be able to bring it back if my volume buttons were working so I think I'm gonna go for it...

Thanks again for all your help, in the write up you directed me to it mentions something about SDK backup.
I found EVO ROOT, EVO BACKUP, EVO ZIP, and REFLASH PACKAGE on my laptop.
I'm hoping if I can get the volume buttons werking I can use these files to bring my phone back ??

    Thanks again

It was my daily phone, but I switched to Verizon, and got two Samsung Galaxy III mini's and an S-4 for my son for $250.00, and signing a 2 year contract, (witch I'm really worried about..).

I sold the EVO 4G on Amazon, but can't send a phone I advertised as rooted if it's bricked.

Just so you know, I tried to hook the phone up to the laptop, and copy and paste the EVO Root / EVO backup files to the phone in device manager, but it does nothing.
The other peculiar thing is: when I hold down the power button it usually went into "Power Off" "Restart" mode.
But it does nothing right now..

    Thanks again,
I'll let you know what happens with Dr. Phone Fix tomorrow.

AS promised I am checking in to update you on the wonderful service offered by Dr. Phone Fix.
I called at 10:00 AM, but they were not open yet.
I left a message and called back several times, around 11:45 I finally got through to someone who explained I had to speak to a manager.
I'm still waiting for a call back.
I think I'm gonna just show up tomorrow in person and be as assertive as possible without punching someone.
I'll let you know what happens.

    Not quite, but almost.
I tried calling several times and could not get through ( I guess they have caller ID).
So I went there after work and patiently waited, when it was my turn they said the volume buttons did not work because the micro switches were missing, it was not their fault, etc, etc.
So I asked them to put it back together and return my phone, but while they were doing this, people started coming in, and before I knew it there were 8 or 9 customers in the shop.
That's when I started asking them how many other people they have robbed, and how many other victims were out there because they didn't know what they were doing.
I mentioned the fact that it took SEVEN visits just to get my screen put on correctly, and they were stupid enough to admit it in front of everybody.
One guy gave me his card, he said his cousin is a lawyer.
Soooo they immediately said they would order the new switches and call me when they came in at no charge.
I hope they don't totally screw up my phone, but as it was, it was useless anyways, so I figured I had nothing to lose.
I guess I'll find out when I get it back...
I'll be sure to post up on it.
Thanks for all your help, and for asking.
Hopefully I'll be communicating with you soon with some good news...

Can you help me bring this thing back to life ?
