build number 1.76

i have had m hero/g2touch for about a month and have got numerous apps and music/picture files on my phone.my build number is 1.76 do i need to upgrade it and if i do should i back up all my data.how is the best way to do that.thanks a lot

Download MyBackup (or MyBackup Pro) from the market, this will backup and restore pretty much everything. I think there is an issue with SMS messages - the file format has changed between 1.73 and 2.73, so dont restore those.
